Any views on what were the best bookshelf size speakers made in the 1970's?
Merry Christmas from Australia.

Speaking from what I own, my vote goes to the Dynaco A-25. There is alot of great competition though.

What do you mean by bookshelf? Non floorstander -- in which case a lot of big speakers like AR LSTs and Advents and so on qualify -- or small speakers that actually are made to be on shelves (even if that's not the best place for them)? If its the latter, as I imagine, than the Dynaco A 25 is, indeed a great suggestion, and of course, EPI/Genesis etc. Even smaller, and perhaps more easily found in Australia would be the Mordaunt Short Carnivals and Pageants -- I picked up a pair of Carnival IIs and am delighted with them. Smaller yet, the Burhoe Crimson is surprisingly full throated, though it may actually be early 80s.
But there are many others out there, and there are geographical differences in taste and ubiquity.

Gotta agree on the A-25s. The Smaller Advents were nice too. Of course, neither would fit on a real bookshelf, but hey ...

A vote for Genesis Physics I since I've owned a pair since 1980 or 81, not 70's buy hey. I just picked up a refoam kit recently and after repair, would like to put these in my basement office that we just finished building out this summer. As I recall, they sound awesome. Epi 100 and Dynaco A25 were spectacular as well.

EPI 70V or Advent 4. Or Genesis V6. All are true bookshelf size (20" or less tall, 10" or less wide, 8" or less deep).

I'd readily listen to ANY of them, for as long as you wanted! Very good balance, good bass. Just plain really, really listen-able speakers!

Regards,
Gordon.

I suppose if I really tried I could get my Cornwalls on a bookshelf. Oh never mind.

JBL called the L-166 Horizons bookshelf speakers. They sound great but you would need a very big bookshelf.

Tough to pick a "best" one. The above-mentioned Advents, ARs, EPIs etc... are all very good. I would add JBL studio monitors (the smaller ones, of course!) to the list.

Perhaps 95 percent as good as those are the JVC SX 3 III speakers I'm listening to now; they are a little weak in the low bass, but are wonderfully realistic and musical with low-mids to highs, esp. good with strngs and voice. Usually cheaper, too, since they aren't as well-known outside of Japan.
