DCM Timeframe TF700's

Just picked up a pair in good shape for 30 bucks. What's wrong with them? It looks like both the 4" and 3/8" tweeter are toast on both speakers. the woofers appear ok.

I did a search on the forum and found that partsexpress.com carries the replacement for the tweeter, an Audax 3/8" for 7.50.

However, I can't find any info for a replacement for the 4" and possibly the 8" (the woofers appear ok, but not 100% sure, may replace anyway).

I contacted DCM, and they quickly replied, but didn't know anything, because they were apparently bought out in 1999, and don't have records of the old speakers????

(quote) "Sorry but that is something that we did not get when we bought the company in 1999"
thanks

The "that" was specs for the woofer's I had requested, because they didn't have replacement woofers to sell me.

Any help? I pm'ed cubdog on the forum, because it appears he has done this with some TF600's.

Thanks for any help guys.

Jake

Hum, that's weird. They're so helpful on the other TFs. Odd that they wouldn't have that one model. Worth keeping in mind as we're out trolling for speakers. The Audax is the tweeter that's in my TF 400s and cubdogs 600s so I'm not surprised they used the same one in the 700s. I didn't realize the 700s were so much different from the others.

Take care,

Ed

Jake I'm looking for the info you requested. There are two contact women at DCM. I'm not sure if I have the names here or at work. Since we are snowned in here in Denver I may not be able to send it to you till Friday. I will say they were helpful and I received my woofer within a week of ordering it. The tweeters for the 600s are no longer available though DCM. For those you must order from PE. I'm not sure about the 700s.

Retro: Yes, I got those of CL, They were in good cosmetic shape, one small tear in the grill cloth, and no name plates. However, the guy was kind of a jerk in that it took me 10 minutes for him to let me test the speakers, long story short most of the speakers were blown, but I thought I'd try to fix em up, since I build my own speakers anyway. I offered him 30 bucks if he would test them (5 more), he reluctantly said ok, and in the end was a nice enough guy.

Cubdog: Thanks for looking. Let me know what you find.

I have some non-oem 4" speakers, and tweeters at home, that I could just try, however I'd like to attempt getting the stock drivers to match the crossover. At least, if the price is right, I will get replacement drivers.

I got the manual from the DCM person, but it was not of much help.

Thanks
Jake

Called DCM, the tweeter replacement is partsexpress # 264-500.

No info on the midrange or woofer replacement. The company wouldn't be willing to spec out (t/s parameters) for possible replacements either, even if I shipped it to them.

Jake

Jake,
I have a pair of DCM TF 500s I think? I also think they use the same drivers for the uppers, maybe not? Maybe someone knows?

DCM Tweeters available

I can help you out with the tweeters, I have several new DCM Units. The TF600 did not use a 4 " driver. They used 2 - 6.5" drivers per cabinet. No help on the mid or woofer I'm afraid.
Good Luck,
Jim

There is one other tech support person, maybe I will talk to her, and try to send in the drivers for possible help, but I think the mids are blown, so really not much they could even do.

Anyone have a pair of working TF700s

What time did you walk out of there? Thursday at 1:01?

I hot trotted over there, always wanted to peek in that shop. Timeframes were gone - drat. Monkeyed with the Yamaha stack for a while, then dude showed up. We got along great - Alex.

His wife is very nice.

I wound up buying the Nak CD4 for $35, plays great. Might go back for the Denon LD player. I have some Chinese LD's to give him if he decides to set one up in a demo rig. I think he'd appreciate the help as I described the functions of the preamp, what loudness is for, etc.

Glad an AKer got them. I didn't really need a project, was hoping for a broken wire.

I think Madisound will work with what you have to find the best replacements?

I agree with Colin. The folks that run that place a very nice people to deal with. I was there Monday and looked at the DCMs, but I really don't need another pair of speakers.

They come up with some nice vintage stuff once and a while as well.

Before you replace the tweeter and buy replacements, Pull the crossover out of the back and look for a fuse lamp. I bought a pair of TF 400s under similar circumstances and found that the fuse lamp on the crossover was burned out. It is a $2.80 part from DCM and was delivered in 4 days. Take a look. I don't know if yours has them, but it might save you a big hassle.

Pull the woofer and midrange and see if there is a part number marked on them. I'm pretty sure DCM didn't make any of their own drivers. Also test the drivers. I think someone here said they use lamps in the crossover as fuses, and the lamps may have burned out.
The tweeters are a Vifa D19TD-05-08.

I agree, the wife was super nice, and actually allowed me to test the speakers even when Alex said no. After some discussion, Alex seem to become more agreeable after I offered him 30, he kept saying "I'm not trying to be a jerk".

I will look into taking the crossover apart in the next hour and let you guys know what's up, with the fuse lamp and all.

I hope to test the speakers after the crossover to make sure it is not the culprit.

I may just do a total redo of the drivers with a design on partsexpress forum called the Jubilee's, maybe.

Thanks for the help.

It is hard to beat what DCM put in there in the first place. If it ain't broke don't fix it, would be my words of wisdom as a DCM lover from way back.

Good news, the drivers work, but the crossover over is off somehow.

I am trouble shooting the crossover, and can't get the midrange to work with the + and - in the terminals, the tweeter and woofer work.

To me, it looks like the crossover is designed with a short in it, in the midrange section, but I am not an expert, and didn't design these.

No fuse lamps either.

Hmm... It's been almost 2 hours, and I can't figure this out.

Any techs

1. check any resistors you see, they may be open.
2. Sometimes from vibration, the leads on components get broken right where they go into the board. This happens especially on the coils, but also on larger caps and resistors.

I am going to check for continuity in all the connections this weekend.

There is a break in the chain, must be... I will go back at it.

I've done this before, with success however, the DCM's have a very complicated and not very well laid out crossover, IMHO.

It might be difficult to follow, but DCM crossovers are, in my opinion, works of art.
