Another CL scam ...or not? I'm confused!

Should I mail him a box full of bricks or just let it go?

It seems lately I can't sell anything on CL without getting emails from scammers.

Below are emails between me and scammer:

"Buyer":
Hello,
>
> I would like to make an urgent purchase of this item, kindly get back
> to me with the terms and conditions of it and if it still available to
> purchase, then i will make my purchase as soon as possible.
>
> Hoping to hearing from you soon.
>

The usual signs of scam - item instead of an actual description...

Me (from my junk email account):

> I will gladly sell this item to you.Payment can be made in cash, money order
> or check.Where do you want me to send this item?
> God bless you!

"Buyer":

in GEORGIA ,i really need to buy this and send to my
son schooling outside the state as a graduation gift .I have
been trying to buy this on eBay but its so very stressful
buying on eBay.I will offer you $30 extra so as to close the
deal as soon as possible.I will be paying through PAYPAL
because i have a verified account with PayPal.So kindly get back with
your PayPal email address so i can make payment into your PayPal
account.Once payment clears, shipment will be handled by me through my
personal FedEx account,so you don't have to pay for
shipment.Get back to me if my approval is granted.I would like to see
the pictures please.
Thanks

So far so good. It seems like all scammers have a template for such emails. So I decided to be a bit more playful.

Me:

Pictures are in the ad (three of them). Are you satisfied with the pictures?
> If you want to I can engrave "Happy Graduation" on a screen which will make
> this gift truly special to your son!
> May Allah bless you with endless pleasures and erection.

Any normal person will read this email and tell me "Go f...k yourself, weirdo!" Not this guy...

"Buyer"

Thanks alot,

kindly get back with your PayPal email address so i can make payment
into your PayPal account.Once payment clears, shipment will be handled by me through my personal FedEx account, so you don't have to pay for shipment. Get back to me if my approval is granted so as to make the deal as soon as possible.

hoping to hearing from you soon
.

Really?

Me:

I do not have PayPal account because I am a monk of St. Thomas and Aruba
> Order and we are forbidden to have accounts with PayPal because of the evil
> nature of the beast. All the proceeds from this sale will go to fight hunger
> in the poorest regions of the country such as Palm Beach FL, Greenweech, CT
> and Hamptons NY.Is there any other form of payment?
> May Jahve bless your soul and make your constipation endless!

Who in a right mind will continue talking to me after that???????????

"Buyer"

Thanks for letting me know this, you can set up your own PayPal
account, it just so easy to open just logging to paypal.com and follow
there procedure there after that you have get your own account..Please
when you finish please let me know and i will be waiting for you as soon
as possible so as to send the money into your paypal account...

Another payment option i can make is Telegraphic Transfer TT by bank,
do have that too?

hoping to hearing from you soon.

Sure...

Me:

> I know it is easy to open a PayPal account. But as I mentioned I am a monk
> and we are prohibited from having bank or PayPal or any other accounts. So the
> only acceptable from of payment for me would be a check or WU transfer.
> May our Lord extend your smile from ear to ear!

And that's when he freaks me out:

"Buyer":

okay...will Western Union be Okay for you? i hope that is what you
meant by WU Transfer
well, let me know so that by tomorrow i will know what to do

Hoping to hearing from you soon.

Western Union? Everything is upside down. Usually scammers ask you to WU money somewhere...
So is this guy legit after all???????
I'm still 99% sure it's a scam.

What do you think?:scratch2:

Weird. That's for sure. I was surprised he didn't react at all to your wishing him an endless erection (I mean, even the folks at Viagra warn you about an erection lasting longer than 4 hours - say no to priapism) and constipation.

I mean, it sure sounds like a scam, but if he's willing to WU the money, then you have some apologies to make.

Ooops.

western union money orders can be forged just as easily as any other. they're hoping the shipment is made before the mistake is realized.

take it from someone else who made a separate account just to toy with them (necessary btw, unless you like spam having to do the enlargement of ones personal member)
these are most definitely scams

Oh please continue with this story. I got a bucket of popcorn and in my comfortable chair hanging on to every post. :D
:lurk:

Scam?

PayPal email IS my real email. I don't want to give it to obvious scammers!

Let's stall for a while...
Me:

Hello,

You mentioned you will handle shipping using your FEDEX account.
Can you please explain how.
The reason I'm asking is that our holy order resides inside caves in snow-covered
mountains of Southwestern Connecticut.
We do not have roads here and no Fedex truck can make it up the mountain goat trails.
I will have to walk 3 days to the nearest Fedex location to drop a package.
Also if it will be shipped outside the US I will have to fill and submit customs form.
Please let me know.

It's got to be a scam but whats the angle? Is there a risk in giving out your paypal email?

well the risk with paypal is that it was funded with stolen CC's which will eventually be reversed and charged back to you.

as far as WU cashing it, they wont. your bank will because they dont immediately know its stolen. but it will be charged back to you upon discovery, even though it initially cleared and "all was good".

its not an issue of you can go to jail or not, you have to knowingly receive stolen property to be prosecuted, furthermore that fact has to be proven, if suspected. you will eventually lose any money you gain though, as well as your item.

I bet the real part of the scam has yet to be told. When he does send the paypal or WU money, he'll accidentally send you $1000 too much and ask you to WU it back. Then when his money bounces, you'll be on the hook for the $1000. He doesn't give a damn about the item you're selling, he probably doesn't even know what it is.

I understand the nervousness from the seller - and the buyer should take a clue on it.

On the other hand, I have been trying to purchase from CL and I always let them know that I live in NH. Nobody ever replies and if they did, they think that I am a scammer. I think CL just did not work for an out of state buyer and seller only wants a local cash only.

In one instance, I offer to the seller that a friend of mine will come, look at the speakers, and pay with cash. Still - they treated me as a scammer.

Not sure what to do.

As a matter of fact I don't have any wireless signal in my cave.
But it will be revealed later.
For now let's see how would we handle shipping.
And probably you are right about next step - "accidentally" more money sent....
Patience....
