Cleaned up the Altec Vega's tonight...

...actually intended on putting some Ultralinear tweeters in the Madrids tonight, but when I got the first one in, I realized I liked the sound of the CV's better...So, out came the Dremel, and sanded down the outside flange that was slightly too large on the CV's, and they slid right in  :D ...Here's some pix of the pieces and parts, including the absolutely pristine 420-A's...

Look nice and sound great...to me they sound like the little brother of the M19's....They have a 6uFD cap high pass filter, crossing them over in the 3000Hz range...May have to replace those, even though they read as an open circuit...Life is good!:music: :music: :D

What do you think?

Very nice! They look much better than before!

I really like the sound of those, aren't you glad you got them???

...Considering they cost $150, hell yes!:music:

The 420's operate wide open, right?

Considering running the tweeter in at around 8K or so? Play with polarity?

Those would be fun to mess with. A nice set of tilting stands would be a good accessory.

Thought about playing with the crossover...

....According to the specs the 420-A's freq response goes up to 15K, although I'm pretty sure I don't believe that. What do you mean by "wide open"? There is no filter of any kind for the 420-A's if that's what you mean, and only a single cap/6 db high pass filter for the tweeter...

The reason I went with the CV's is that the Ultralinears seemed to have a hole in the midrange and also seemed less efficient. The CV's may actually sound a bit forward in some ways, but I suppose that would be nothing new for an Altec speaker....

I may play with the X-overs a bit since I have a set of Solen caps coming in to recap my M19 X-overs, including some 4 uFD, which would cross over at 5KHz. That should give me a good indication of the upper mid/lower HF response of the 420-A's. Wonder if Zilch has ever tested the 420-A?:scratch2:
