Just got it out of the box and here we go...WOW, this is the best player I have ever had or heard!! (compared to the MCD 7000, and 205) Keeping my fingers crossed. It is running thru my C46 and into mc252, mc7270, and Ma 6200 and into Mac speakers through out the house. You can tell a big difference on all amps...dead quiet drive, no popping noise between tracts, very smooth and extreme low noise output (using balanced cables), very high output, extreme detail on Starker's Bach celo suites (SACD) great bass on Charlie Brown Christmas SACD, I will try to find the other details as to manufacture date and firmware version in the morning.

My new 201 still works great!! SACD is fantastic, never had one before, redbook also better than my other players. OK here are the details:
Date of manufacture: November 2007
Serial No. DX 02331
sticker on back: 144917
Firmware:015
Date:5-30-06
other no.: MB06070525A
Can you explain what these mean?

My unit from April 2007 has an XD.... serial number. It seems that there was an evolutionary step between April and November 2007 (!).
The firmware version 015 and release date May 30, 2006 are the same as on my last drive that did not work ....
This other number I cannot explain but drives from December 2006 still showed a different number. This could also mean that there was an evolutionary step.
Maybe the RL-S881 drive was substituted by something better?
A McIntosh expert can open the unit by releasing the six screws after the power has been disconnected. On top of the drive there is a sticker which indicates the type of drive.

My new drive is still not here ....
I am. Sent back my second one and ordered a new Yamaha CD-S2000 to replace it. No more 'experimenting' for me.
Will definitely let everyone know once it arrives. Unfortunately, that is not until 02/08, after the formal intro of the new Yamaha gear at CES '08.
Here is the Japanese analog of Audiogon: http://www.hifido.co.jp/. I and several others I know have had excellent success in purchasing through them. They definitely know how to pack to survive about anything. Little on the expensive side to ship, though. Was $385 to ship a 57 pound integrated amp over to the U.S. And, most of the high-end, Japan-only gear will be 100vac. To be safe you need to run a 120/100vac step-down transformer. No big deal. About $75. Do wish these companies would allow us to buy their best gear. Appears that Yamaha is with their new CD-S2000. I'll be very disappointed if they release something better in the home market.
BTW - am purchasing my CD-S2000 through Audio Classics. They are an authorized Yamaha dealer.

So far, the 201 works just fine...no noise, no skipping. I can hear the drive making a slight whinning noise while loading, and only had one disc skip, but worked ok after I cleaned the disc. The sound is very good, my only complaint is you have to reload the disc to play it again.

Try the REPEAT function on the remote control (RPT). It should work for individual tracks as well as for the whole CD.
