The 360 degree Walsh tweeter on my newly acquired Infinity WTLC's is suppossedly crossed over at 8k(mechanical) according to the spec sheet..however it has a 3.5uf capacitor, the same as the Peerless mid(s) which crossovers at 2000. Does "mechanical" mean that the Walsh tweeter, even with a crossover cap of 3.5, is only capable of producing sound above 8000hz?:scratch2:

Could they have different impedance's? It seems like the Walsh tweeter is fairly unconventional compared to a Peerless mid.

...............after a visiual inspection of the crossover network, I find that the Infinity spec sheet is wrong about this model having two 3.5uf capacitors. There is the 3.5 for the Walsh and a larger one( unreadable) for the mids. However I misread the mechanical crossover point thinking it was for the Walsh tweeter at 8khz, it's actually a mechanical x-over for the two bass drivers at 500hz:sigh:. The woofers run without a choke/coil. I found a Wikipedia explanation of a mechanical crossover which basically states frequency rolloffs come about by the materials used in the design of the driver. In the case of the WTLC's the bottom down-firing driver is heavily doped whereas the front firing is it a bit less doped.. Still havent a clue as to what these sound like:scratch2:
 
Corrected Infinity WTLC Schematic & wiring Diagram

This it folks. There were errors in the schematic and thanks to naude98 and some labor & research combined with all the fantastic input from this forum now we have a good schematic for the WLTC. The caps provided by naude98 were Dayton 6.8uf 250v for the midrange front & rear firing that ARE wired out of phase with the positive leads connected to the center connector of the pot. The negative ( yellow/black & white leads) go to the fuse holder as well as the negative ( blue/black ) from the Walsh tweeter.
The Walsh tweeter positive lead has an in-line Dayton 250v 1.5 & 2.0uf caps wired in parallel for ( 3.5uf ) connected to the positive input binding post.
The 6.8uf cap goes between the same positive binding post and the 1st connector ( to the right of center ) of the pot. The 8.1 ohm resistor needs to go from the 3rd. connector ( left of center ) of the pot and goes to the negative connector in the fuse folder with all the negative ( gnd ) connections that includes the negative leads from both front and bottom firing woofers. Verify polarity and wire color codes at all speakers and do not trust that they are properly phased. This is how we found errors with Infinity's schematic !
All the negative leads from all speakers run through the fuse, as the woofers, unlike the tweeter and midrange speakers with are protected by caps in only allowing AC current, are not protected from potential DC current in case of an amplifier failure. I replaced the whimpy 14 guage wire for the woofers with 12 guage twin lead audio wire and soldered new spade connectors on the ends and where they met at the postive binding post I tristed the ends together and placed them on one female spade connector for the positive input binding post. We added an additional .250" spade connector tab from Philmore PN#13-1552 found at Sandy's electronics under the original tab on the binding post which was to tiny to permit the heavier wire and caps to utilize the same tab hole.
Snip one in half and you have one for each speaker to allow easy dissconnect of the woofer positive leads and provide for the use of the heavier power cable and an additional connector tab aside from the one now dedicated to the wahsh positive lead and the cap for the midrange. Heat shink is used for all exposed wires and all connections at speakers should be properly insulated fom shorting. We are providing a corrected wiring diagram for the re-constructed crossover and corrected connections as wired by our recommendations. Enjoy !:thmbsp:

Now that I know the midrange cap is 6.8uf I believe I'll soon have to delve into recapping my WTLC.
 
one thing i've found with vintage infinitys is that if the speakers have a california address on them, and the data sheet has a new york address, there is a very good chance the schematic is wrong. i blame harmon kardon for not having their act together when publishing the tech sheets. a lot of incorrect info disseminated by HK once they took over. some HK tech sheets list incorrect drivers for early models as well. shoddy fact checking for sure at HK.

pre-HK, infinity did seem to know what they were doing.

I had a pair of those. Superb speakers! Don't be foolish enough to sell them, as I was.
 
Normally disinterested friends and family alway ask which speakers are they hearing when the WTLCS are in play and are invariably suprised when I point out which ones.:yes:

Those Infinity cone tweeters are superb as well! Best I've heard.

I like them also and sound especially nice the way the West German Peerless tweets are integrated into the design utilizing the Walsh for the uber frequencies:).
I really dig the Sequerra phase plug modified paper cones in his speakers systems:yes:
 
No Love For The Infinity 2000 II Speakers?

No doubt the Infinity WTLC are great sounding speakers, but I bought a pair of Infinity 2000 II speakers new back in 1977 and loved them from the first night of music played through them. Over the years, I have tried out various different speakers to see if they had a better sound, but always came back to my 2000 II's. I am looking for someone that has had the same love for these speakers with much more knowledge than I have that would be willing to share how to get the most out of these speakers. I guess the primary target would be a crossover upgrade.

I have a later version of the 2000II, the Monitor IIa which is verticallt aligned and sound very nice.

Tubed- The IIa's you have are beautiful specimens indeed. I have a pair of Monitor II's and half a pair of IIa's, Fed Ex destroyed the other one. All need restoration, cabinets are in good shape, but woofs need refoam, crossover upgraded and walsh tweeters replaced.

Both the WTLC and Monitor IIa are superb vintage speakers.
The Walsh tweeter on each supply a very good example of extended airy highs exemplary of some of the best ribbon tweeters I've experienced.
Very well balanced with visceral bass and smooth mids.
