Dazed and Confused
Where can I find the speaker stands for large floor speakers (HPM-100), that are 6-8" tall (?), about a foot square, and had a very slight front to back tilt to them? I used to have a couple of sets, and I either lost them or sold them.....I have looked all over the net for some, and I just am not having any luck? Anyone? Thanks!

Here is a pic of some JBL stands for L100's, I think. Pretty easy DIY project. I have more pics, if this interests you. You could easily adjust the dimensions, if you wish.

6 to 8' is awlfully high for a speaker as heavy & bulky as an HPM-100! Especially if you want them to tilt.

I would'nt put 'em THAT high.

Everything I've read suggests putting the HPMs at about 14-18" off the ground, no tilt. I can vouch for the improvement. It really tightens up the bass (I find them muddy on the ground) and does a little smoothing on that hump in the response curve. They're still HPMs (which in my opinion is not a bad thing - they're nice for a change up and a voice-forward sound) but more even. I'm working up a design for stands to take away the cinder blocks.
Has anyone had them on 6-8" with a tilt? I'd like to know how that sounds.
 
I'm in the process of making a set of stands 9" tall. The top and bottom plates are 10" square and 1/4" plate steel and the upright section is 1/4" wall by 4" square tube. They bolt together and are fillable with sand or whatever you desire. I have already made a set 12" tall and used them with a number of different large 12" woofered speakers. You could hold the world up with these things. I put spikes in the bottom that allow them to adjust to about a 3 degree tilt. Filled with steel shot they weigh in at 40 pounds each. If this sounds like what you are looking for let me know and I'll look into interest from others and buy enough material to build a half dozen or so. I actually talked to Kam about this a couple of months ago but didn't think anyone would be interested.

Exactly! All mine are on 16" HD pedestals capable of handling much more weight. I had them made by "The Rack Man"
This was quite some time ago though and this is a side job for him. He normally makes quilt racks. Run a google search and see if you can find him. I know a few others here at AK have had him make them custom racks as well. These are made of wood, and I know some here prefer metal stands.

I had mine on 14" square cubes for a month, until last weekend, and the sound was excellent. Bass was superb, tight and very clean. I had to make space in my living room for a Christmas tree so the cubes had to be moved. So that was my opportunity to try the 100's on them.

I agree that they can sound muddy when set directly on the floor.

I have them back on 6" cores again and I have to say that 14" is much better.

i have my 100's about 9 inches off the ground with a tilt also I have 15 inch stands on the way as we speak the first stand made a world of difference I wlll have to see what 15 inches will do. I originallybought the stands for some hpm 60's i guess i will give them a listen

Really the same thing raising them off the ground does. With these speakers, and really any non-floorstander, the idea is to do two things:
1. Get the woofers off the ground so they aren't "coupled" I think is the word. If they're too close, the low frequency sound wave bounces off the floor and up to you, but at a slight delay - so you hear the impact of the bass note twice, or spread out. Thus, "muddy".
2. Get the tweeters basically aimed at your ear level at the listening position. They aren't sitting that high, but the tilt makes it so they behave as if they are. Helps a lot in imaging.

What I don't know, and why I asked, is if it does accomplish this, especially with the challenging -100s. Some amount of the LF wave will be directed at the floor and reach you on reflection. Something about imagining these waves from those positions intuitively tells me the low stand plus tilt still gets some reflectde bass.

But really, what do I know. I'm a self-professed idiot.

I'll try to mock up some 6" tilts and give them a try later this week.

Good rock solid stands can me made cheaply from a couple of concrete building blocks and wraped in some upholstery material. These were my stands for a time in my old house on the hardwood floors, pre carpeting. :yes:
 
rl...i made a pair of stands exactly like the ones luvvinvinyl shows which are copies of the stands JBL sold for the monitors (L100's)..I would think they would work very well for the HPM's since after all they are next generation L100's...they do in fact behave just as Wank has described very well in the thread above...they aren't too hard to make with some basic woodworking tools...let me know if I can help ya out building a pair if your interested...a
 
FWIW, when I had my HPM-100's I had them 15" off the floor. It was PERFECT!
I agree that getting them off the floor makes this fabulous speaker perform even more so.

So, it appears the general consensus is apx. 15", not the 6-8" I inquired about. Thanks to all. Now, it's off to my laboratory!
 
Here are my NS-1000 perched up on some old solid oak stands I got recently. They are about 10" at the front and tilted back enough to get the sound stage right where you what it. Awesome sounding speaker ... just awesome! :thmbsp:

well the stands are here and truly 15 inches is the perfect height for the 100's bass got much tighter and mid and treble is now earball height so you can close your eyes and hear the music in fact i can see the "who" right now gotta go
