Magnavox 6V6 monoblocks

I paid for these this afternoon and will pick them up Saturday. The CL seller was very nice, and an avid radio collector. He told me that he has a Crosley table radio, NIB, that he wants me to look at Sat.

I plan on restoring them and having cases made for them. I wonder how they will sound through La Scalas.:scratch2:

Anyway, here are the Maggies, along with some other radio eye candy. I didn't catch the brands of everything, for it was a whirlwind tour. If anyone has a schematic for these, I would be most grateful.

Any guesses on the model number or year of manufacture?

Heck yeh, I was allready thinking they may be good enough for an output iron upgrade (but the Maggie iron seems to be awfully good allready). Are you thinking something like; cap upgrades, jack upgrades, nice wood cases, etc...? They just scream "make me pretty and I'll sing my a$$ off". :D

When I first got into this hobby, I passed on a very similar Tele console. :no: Didn't recognize the "goofy" name. :no: :tears:

Ken, Memphis ain't that far, maybe you need to plan a visit to KC. We could do the whole project (electrical and wood) in a hard weekend. :scratch2:
 
You might want to check those amps for equalization circuits if you plan to use them outside the consoles they came in. Magnavox tuned their designs for an overall effect of the console which is why these old Maggie console sound very musical as-is. Howver, if you remove the amps to use elsewhere you need to be aware of what they were "up to"

Yikes! I had that exact Midwest console model. One of the many sets I now regret getting rid of. The cabinets were actually pretty cheap and should really be heavily shaded. When refinished correctly they are very striking Art Deco designs and worth considerable money. Here is a pic of simular one refinished correctly and you'll see what I mean.

Since we are talking Magnavox 6v6 amps though you all might like to see the backside pic of the Magnavox Concert Grand mentioned in one of the above articles. I've never seen one of these nor a "front side" picture.

50 Watts per channel in a Bi amped configuration per side. Total of 16 6v6's/

Here are the amps in their unfinished glory.:D No rust, just some oxidation. They will polish up nicely. I felt kinda guilty ripping apart a working console, but the cabinets need refinishing and I wouldn't dare place any of my vinyl on that old TT.

The amps are slightly different from each other.:scratch2: The one on the left is a model AMP 169 BB which powered the command unit, and the one on the right is a model AMP 138 DD (Mr. Bavis was correct on this one) which powered the extension cabinet.

The AMP 169 BB has a tube compliment of 5Y3GT(1), 6V6GT(2), and 6AN8(1).

Shouldn't be too hard to make 'em match using 12ax7's. Should be a minor rewire job you could do while recapping.
 
I agree - the 12AX7 circuit is the way to go. I'd add a fuse too - 1/2A to 3/4A slo-blo in each.

I have the AMP169 schematic too, if you want it...
