Cs 88a

Hello all.I just got my hands on a set of CS 88A's.After reforming the tweeters,I tried them out.On one everything worked but the Woofer after 10 mins it started to work with a little cracking noise.On the other one the Woofer still is not working and on all the other ones there is some cracking noise .It looks like am going to replace all the caps and resisters on both crossovers.This will be my frist.So am hoping some one can give me a list of parts and were I should go to get them.

I don't know what you mean when you said "reforming the tweeters". You can check the woofer that doesn't work with an ohm meter. I will give you the list of the parts I would use both for myself and customers. These need to be ordered from Parts Express.

027-410 1uf $ 1.18
027-418 3uf 1.99
027-423 5.1uf 2.54 027-440 30uf 8.95
027-443 50uf 13.10
These are all polypropelene caps. I would use 027-354 50uf $1.06 in place of 027-443 for the woofer to lower the cost. It is a non-polar electrolytic.

The resistors I use are Mills non-inductive resistors.
005-30 30ohm, 12watt $4.25 (you need 2 for EACH speaker)
005-15 15ohm, 12watt 4.25

This list is for one speaker.
Don't forget to clean the potentiometers.

These capacitors will be much bigger than the ones you are replacing. It can be done, but takes time. You can use shrink tube to insulate the legs of the new caps but I strip the insulation off of 14 gauge house wire and cut it to length. It's thicker and costs me nothing. I will be recapping 7 sets of speakers when my order comes in ($231.76 for caps alone) later this week. One set is a pair of CS99a. If you get stuck maybe I can send some pics.

Just curious have you verified the woofers are functional? I have a set of these as well as a set of CS-77a's. Great speakers -please keep us informed of your impressions after the recap. Good luck!
