25Wx2 EL509 OTL Amp - Work in progress

Many years ago, when I had a bit more leisure time, I planned to build amps with different designs and topologies to investigate the "sound" of each.

Among them were push-pull AB designs (of course); single-ended using 6C33 pentodes, parafeed, etc. I'd read about OTL amps and their costs and reliability problems. And then I ran into a schematic for a 25 or 80 watt/channel OTL amp, called "The Transcendent OTL", in Bruce Rozenblit's interestingly titled book, "Audio Reality." The design was scalable (25 or 80 watts per channel) and used EL509 outputs.

Bruce, an apparently humble man prone to understatement, had this to say about his design:

"This is it! It doesn't get any better than this. If you want clarity, detail, resolution and accuracy, nothing beats an OTL . . . and this is the best OTL there is." Further, "It is light, airy, open, tremendously fast, yet totally musical without coloration of any kind."

How could anyone resist? :D

So initially, I put a lot of thought, time, and money into the project. I decided on separate power supplies, using custom-wound toroid transformers. Also, I planned to use 6CG7s for drivers instead of the tubby-sounding (IMHO) 12AU7s.

I spent a bunch of time cutting holes in one of my chassis. And then it sat on the shelf for years, as various audio projects tend to do around my house.

So now I'm back on task. I thought I'd post a thread of my progress. And I promise not to use as much understatement as Bruce.

I see you got the audio transformers mounted ... now all you gotta do is get that power transformer in place and you're good to go!

Very unique design, and quite attractive too.

Looks like it's lit, but with no anode caps, I imagine it's just the heaters at this point?

The tubes were just set in place for layout. I'm doing the wiring now. No tube caps yet . . . but they are coming. So the "lit" look is an illusion, I guess.

Your OTL looks nice and symmetrical.

Do you have an acoustically symmetrical listening room.

Ah the original EL509, not the JJ replica with the octal pinout. I was looking at the EL509 a while back for a PP design. Got the circuit all designed, but not to the "cutting holes" stage. It's still on my list.

I'm trying to remember this OTL circuit...does it use coupling caps to isolate the speakers from the output stage? My current project is redplating one output tube...I found the culprit...a bad coupling cap.

No, this one doesn't us a coupling cap at the output. It's quite a novel circuit, which addresses many of the design problems of earlier work. Bruce got a patent for it, No. 5,604,461, which he will humbly bring to your attention a few times.

I can't find a schematic on line, and I doubt Rozenblit wants his IP provided for free on the net, so if you want to see the actual schematic, you probably need to buy his book.

Also, if you buy the book, there are some interesting and worthy projects. And who among us doesn't want to be exposed to "Audio Reality", and depart from the hazy illusions, delusions, and misinformation that we all have carried or suffered with over the years?

(They still look like it - is it only me?)

Only thing I'd do mechanically is add some ventilation holes around the big tubes ... get some of that chimney action going to keep them cooler.

• Source for chassis: me.
• Dimensions: 12" x 17" x 2.5"
• Top & bottom are 1/8" thick aluminum. Frame is steel.
• Finish: Powder coated (current production is a bit more of a matte finish)
• I agree - the tubes do look lit. But I have yet to wire the filament circuit.
• Good advice about the chimney effect. I guess I'll see what real estate remains for air holes after I'm done mounting everything underneath. There are holes for the anode wires by each tube now.

Hmmm, I have 100 PL504's (13GB5) here. Sounds like I may be able to use/modify this circuit with these lower powered sweep tubes instead, maybe worth taking a chance.

Jon forgive my ignorance. Looking at the concept for the first time. It would seem at first glance that not having to buy 2 quality opts would make this a less expensive design. I'm sure I'm wrong . Just not sure why yet

6P45S is the Russian version, some made by Svetlana. An American numbered sub is the 6KG6A.
 
Oh there's a new for 257 and a used (like new for 100) still serious coin for a paperback. Wonder if my library has one.
