Jerry, I haven't heard them, but they have a good reputation in their price range.

I would think they would be decent speakers for a starter system, if you wanted to buy new, plus they are a Kloss design.

Haven't heard these, but lets look at this logically;

Its a 2 way acoustic suspension design by Henry Kloss (no bloated upper bass like cheap ported speakers)
Its new with a 5 year warranty (no cap replacement or rotted surrounds)
Its got a 30day return policy (whats Goodwill's return policy?)

At $75.00 each on your doorstep how can you lose? Go for it and enjoy the music.....
 
I've heard them (friend has a pair), they are a very good speaker in their price range, but I find them to be a bit "dark" in the upper-midband, affecting vocals.

Replacing surrounds and caps is easy and can be done for less than 20 on most models. You can find decent speakers at the goodwill for 40 or less. I have seen some nice sets, but I guess that depends on where you live.

For example I purchased a pair of Bose 301s Series 1 for 12 at a goodwill type store. I put another ten dollars into them and an hour and half of work, used them for several months and then decided to let them go in favor of some other speakers. I sold them on ebay for close to 50, so I walked away with a bit more cash to buy the next set.

So it all depends on how much you like to restore speakers. I enjoy the restoration process and the fact that I can recoup my money if I don't like them or want to change out for another pair. It all depends on what you like. If you don't like restoring things than you should buy what you want new.

if i see a pair of speaks i like and they need a refoam, im definitly buying them. im on my second pair of infinitys for refoam. and im looking forward to it. excellent quality, with te emits and the poly ten inch woofer. they need a clean up but they are in superb condition other wise. nothing wrong with a little work to bring them up to more than acceptable condition. i enjoy doing it. and with not too much money to get it done.:music:
 
I bought a pair of refurbished Cambridge Model 6 speakers last year.....direct from the CSW web-site.....for $90.
Last time I looked.....they had a 10 year warranty.
They sound very close to my recapped KLH 17 speakers.....a little less bottom end, but a more extended top end.....in other words, quite good.
IF.....you want to get a little adventuresome.....and void the 10 year warranty too boot.....there is a crossover upgrade mod, that has been floating around the DIY forums for quite some time.

I did the mod........$40 for new resistors, inductors, and caps.
How did the mod work out?

These $90 speakers are now in my MAIN system......oh yes, that good!

The CSW Sixes are very nice, and readily spruce up with a crossover rework to quite impressive for their modest cost. My daughter's used these (with the XO redesign) since she started college (2002) with an hk 680i; she's out in the real world now but still likes them a lot.

The XO design was published in audioXpress in 2001.

The CSW Sixes were among Henry's last designs.

The even smaller and cheaper CSW Seventeens (which may still be available, too?) weren't bad, either.

If you're looking for a new speaker, you can't go wrong with those, IMO. CS has a 30 day return option, and they used to even pay for the return postage! For an even better deal, look for their discounted speakers that others have mentioned. These are the ones that have been returned under the 30 day trial. If you get on their mailing list, they often have special deals like free shipping.

Love the Johnny Winter avatar. I love JW. Ever read about how someone got BB King to give the kid a chance when Johnny was ~12? BB asked for the guitar back quickly and wasn't ha[[y this kid showed him up in front of audience.

I prefer his early stuff with Bobby Shannon. Progressive Blues Experiment. Also love Seond Winter with Edgar on keys and sax.
 
Don't forget the well liked Infinity Primus line. you can get the p162 (6" 1/2") bookshelves for 99 each new, or get a refurbed pair for a little more than that through Harman's ebay, maybe even less if you're lucky. I purchased some refurb betas from them through ebay and i could literally find nothing wrong with them, i suspect they were actually open box. Also, if there's a Fry's nearby you, they rather frequently have sales on the p362 floorstander for $99 each.

Another thing to consider are a pair of Behringer B2030P monitors at about $140 a pair. I was tipped off to these by a member over at Audioholics, Wmax who is incredibly knowledgeable about audio and on a constant quest to find the flattest responding speakers possible. He's laid out a few simple mods that can be done to the B2030P monitors to fix a few design flaws and reduce cabinet resonance here. I'm really considering going this route to replace my current polks as i'm looking to begin some recording and need more neutral speakers, and with a flatter frequency response you can always eq them to your personal taste, although some will disagree on the use of an eq.

there are also the bic venturi bookshelves and used all day on craigslist....

hope this was somewhat helpful, i thin it might be a bit convoluted, i've been up all night.

16 years later.... I have a question:

I have an opportunity to buy an excellent condition Model Six pair of speakers. For $45. Maybe could negotiate for $40. I don't know if the crossovers or the surrounds need work, but the seller say no. If so, would you experts -- recommend picking them up? (What appears to be blemishes on the grills are sun reflections).
