Altec Valencias almost done!

Here's a couple of before and after shots of a pair of Altec Valencias. They're about 90% done, just putting some finishing work on the risers and then they make the trip over to Idaho. Once there at our folks house, my brother Dave and I will stuff the guts in, cut the new grill frames and try them out! From there, they go to Montana with Dave.

Got these cabs for $100, I think, off of a guy in Seattle. They came out pretty good, considering the condition they were in before. Nice, thick walnut veneer.

Thanksgiving in Idaho with family. Good food and good times working on speakers, it doesn't get much better than that!

Very good looking , i just pick up indenticle cabinets today hope mine turn out as nice as yours . What are you going to use for woofers and drivers .

Thanks, prep work is the key. Go slow and use good materials. The finish consisted of 4 hand rubbed coats of stain, with a week to dry between coats and 8 coats of hand rubbed tung oil, also with a week to dry between coats.

We're gonna try a pair of 421-A woofers to start with, 811 horns with 807-8A drivers and N-809-8A crossovers, just rebuilt with Solen caps. Should be interesting to hear how they compare with the pair of Altec 19's Dave and I rebuilt for our Dad last year for his 80th birthday.

I'll cut a piece of thin fiber type board about the same size as the original lattice grill was. Cut the appropriate sized and shaped holes for the drivers, install, most likely, some duracrest frabrics Klipsch style cloth and carefully slip the new grills into the slots between the front edge facia and the motorboard. Should vork very well and be acoustically better than the original lattice grill.

I ran 418-Bs in the Valencias I put together back in 1974, 421-As should even be a bit more well suited :yes:. I tuned my cabinets but found that I liked the bass best with the ducts removed. Of course that won't be an issue with the early Valencias.

I'd throw some Great Plains 902s on those horns if I had them around :D

We also decided to change out the original daisy-chain style 1/4" phono jacks for a pair of 5-way binding posts on the 809-8A crossovers. You can see the new Solen caps and the fact that I still need to find another knob!

I already have a set of the Flamencos with the matching equipment cabinet, and a set of Altec 846bs with the new GPA 902-8 drivers, however, I still could find room somewhere around here for a pair of those.

Did you guys see what the last set of 19s went for on that auction site? Man-o-man crazy.
