The "New" Advent Loudspeaker is an excellent 10", two-way. Pair in my daughters room for the last 5 years or so. Well worth $15 and re-foam money.

No other differences - they have the same orange tweeter and large woofer.
The N.L.A. can be pretty useful these days - if you buy a bright, screechy remastered CD, you can cut some of that crap out by flipping the tweeter to "decrease"!

Actually, there are some differences. The original Large Advent Loudspeaker has a masonite ring to allow the use of a 10 inch cone on a 12 inch frame. It has a three position switch like the New Large Advent but it's extended postition sounds more like the normal postion on the New LA. In addition, the Original's crossover was 1000hz, while the New LA is crossed over at 1500hz and has ferro-fluid in the voice coil gap. Both these changes were to increase power handling. The New LA used an all steel frame and the foam surround is convex instead of concave like the Original.
Which sounds better is a matter of debate. I purchased the Originals new in 1974 and the New LA's (also new)in 1977. I ran them stacked for awhile but eventually sold the Originals. I'm still not sure which sound best, but the New Large Advents will play louder.

The first Advent Loudspeaker was just called the Advent Loudspeaker. People began to call it the Large Advent when the Small Advent was introduced. It really didn't change until the New LA was introduced.
I was a huge Kloss fan back in the day when these models were current. Henry even called me once to explain the rationale behind the tweeter design in the Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble when it was introduced in 1989. (I know, shameless name dropping, but it was a thrill to talk to him. I consider him to be sort of the Henry Ford of the Audio industry.)

OK. Here's what I've gathered from AK and AA, eBay, and Advent brochures over a few months of digging....
first came the
'Advent Loudspeaker': from 1969~70 to 1977 (79?), masonite ring woofer (steel frame in some very late production), magnet is square; orange 'fried egg' tweeter with the masonite square plate at an angle to the mounting plate, covered with a wire mesh; 14.25 x 25.625 x 11.5 inch cabinet, walnut veneer, with flat beveled front edges, square cornered grill, or utility cabinet with vinyl covering. 3-way switch on the crossover, says 'Designed by: Henry E. Kloss' on the crossover plate: commonly called the Large Advent, but never by the company.
shortly followed by the
'Smaller Advent Loudspeaker': smaller woofer with a huge lumpy dustcap, and a green tweeter that is a little different from the 'Advent' speaker (smaller magnet). Orange tweeters are installed on speakers made in early 1975, but it still has the masonite plate at an angle, and also behind a wire screen; says 'Designed by Henry Kloss' on the crossover plate; 11.5 x 20 x 9.25 inch cabinet vinyl covering, two AK members have found them in walnut veneer, so it must have been available but still possibly added by dealers; commonly called the Small Advent (the company called it the 'Smaller' Advent!)
followed a few years later (possibly after HK left Advent) by the;
'New Advent Loudspeaker': ~1977; steel framed woofer, same cone and magnet structure as the previous 'Advent', 14.125 x 26 x 11.5 inch cabinet walnut veneer with rounded front edges and rounded corner grills, or vinyl covered utility cabinet; orange fried egg tweeter is now flush mounted but is still under a protective wire screen and has a square steel mounting plate (no masonite); 3-way switch on cross-over but different crossover from the original 'Advent', x-over plate simply says "The Advent Loudspeaker" - no reference to Henry Kloss; commonly called the New Large Advent
along with (possibly later) the
'Advent/1': same drivers as the New Advent, but different crossover,
smaller box, vinyl utility with an inset grill, or walnut veneer with a grill which stood proud of the front and had rounded corners (looks like and Avid grill!); sometimes confused with the Smaller Advent, but not the same speaker at all; cross-over plate on the back simply says "The Advent/1" and has no 3-way switch.
After that I don't know which other Advent speakers used the fried egg tweeter.
The 4002 replaced the Advent/1 and the 5002 replaced the New Advent in the early 80's. The tweeter is replaced with a dome tweeter, and it is not offset on some models. An 'Anniversary' model from the early 90's followed and used the same woofer with a round magnet and a dome tweeter.

There was another version of the "traditional-style" Advent, which is more rarely seen. Metal-frame 12"/10" woofer like the "New Advent" style mentioned above, but with a DOME tweeter. These were made between 1980 and 1983, roughly. These had cabinets that looked very much like the "bull-nose" Advents from the late '70s, but had rounded-corner grille frames.
Shortly after, these were replaced by the Advent Legacy, which also had the dome tweeter, but a "standard"-type 10" woofer (ie, in a normal 10" basket). This woofer is very reminiscent of the Boston A100/A150 woofer (which is amusing, since the A100, according to people from Boston Acoustics-who, for a substantial part, were ex-Advent, ex-AR and ex-EPI/Genesis employees- was modelled after the Large Advent itself)... in fact, I've actually used the woofers interchangably in a pinch, temporarily, and could detect no significant difference in the Advent Legacy woofer vs. the Boston A100 woofer. The cabinets on the Legacys were quite different... they had black sides, with wooden "planks" making up the top and bottom fo the cabinet.
I've not seen much of the Anniversary series stuff yet. Guess they, for the most part, haven't started needing new woofer surrounds yet. Their time will come... and I'll be waiting.

I'm gonna chime in here and say that there seems to be some discrepency with Pakrats date of the speakers. I just bought a pair of Large Advent speakers today and here is what I found.
Pakrat found that the 1st set of Large Advents were manufactured between 1969 and 1970. My woofer on my Large Advent has a date of Feb 19, 1974 on it, presumably when it was manufactured, and the tweeter also has a date of Feb 15, 1973 on it. This puts the speaker manufacture date pushed further out to at least early 1974. My Advents woofer has a square magnet, a masonite ring, inverted foam surround, and a steel basket. The tweeter has a metal base which rests on a white foam pad/gasket, a masonite square over the tweeter at a 45 degree offset, and the wire mesh glued over the orange tweeter. The cabinet is a walnut veneer with angled front edges and a plastic liner on the inside of the bevel. The grill is wrapped in a cloth. On the rear, the connection plate has the "Designed by Henry Kloss" writing on it. The inside is damped with real "pink" insulation - a lot of it.
Maybe these findings will help sort out some of the other models and varying production models that some members keep running into.

My 1969-1970 reference is the start date - I think they were made from about 1970 to maybe 1977. Then around 1977 came the New Advent. Yours (and a nice find I might add!) fit right in there as the original Advent.
And all the info about these helps in the long run - my Advent/1's all have yellow foam inside, not fiberglass.

Thanks! Mine are both vinyl woodgrain, and on eBay unless a seller says they are real wood, it's pretty hard to tell. I'm very tempted to remove the vinyl on the rough pair and try using the birch veneer I can get at Home Depot for $20 a roll. Then a walnut stain and oil. Have to fix corner dings though.

The size is about the same as the vinyl covered ones, but the grill is very different - it sits away from the face and has rounded corners. Looked very classy in a way. A pair recently sold on eBay as well, and i found a pdf of the Advent/1 brochure showing them.

The size is about the same as the vinyl covered ones, but the grill is very different - it sits away from the face and has rounded corners. Looked very classy in a way. A pair recently sold on eBay as well, and i found a pdf of the Advent/1 brochure showing them.
