Canton Speakers - Any Experience?

Picking up a pair of Canton Fonum 400 speakers on Friday, but am doing it on faith, as I can't find any info on the Web about them. Orion price guide shows MSRP of $750 in 1989 dollars, and a resale of around $75/pair. These are German speakers, 3-way and appear to be very well built.

Oh yes, and I have listened to the pair I'm buying and they sound very nice.

Anyone have experience with Canton speakers? Thanks!

Yes, Caton's are good .....but speakers quality is subjective. Good cabinets, awesome veneer, good drivers and crossovers.

They look to be the same as my Canton Karat 40 but uses a dome mid instead of a cone mid. I like them very much. But I use an 8" subwoofer to fill in the bottom octave.
 
had canton car mini speakers in an old porsche back in the 80s. sounded great but definitely were a little over Q to get some increased bass and had a bit of a hole in the mids, probably both were design decisions to make the mini speakers sound more like big speakers. certainly excellent speakers, but the result was a bit of mid loss (great rock speakers) and a bit of increased bass from 80-120 hz and a massive drop off below that.

that's only one pair though, I'm certain their larger units had fewer if any compromises, but it's always possible that the tone I'm describing is also a Canton design choice that they like period, not just for their mini speakers.

I do agree they were great speakers, no build flaws, great highs, great overall tone, no wierd resonances or peaks/valleys/phase issues, very listenable, and somewhat complimentary to rock music (but acceptible with classical music too, as opposed to stereotypical "ROCK" speakers such as realistic mach ones LoL "hey! where'd the violins go??").

I have a pair of HC-100's on my computer desktop. I bought them in 1980 for my truck. They have survived despite many hours of abuse from a Pioneer GM-120.:)

I picked up a Canton sub from a thrift store for $10 a few years ago. It was obviously very well made. Eventually I realized I'm just not that much of a bass fan and gave it to my father-in-law.
 
I think I have a pair of those. "Think" because they're at home over my basement work area desk and I'm on the road for a few days.
I think they're a decent speaker but I've never given them a critical listen versus other speakers in my arsenal. I picked up mine at the dump for free ('cause that's how I roll".
I'm powering them with my Yamaha CR-800 and a Pioneer PL-518/M97xe turntable. I use it to audition my recent vinyl finds while working.

Overall I'm sure you'll be pleased.
