Frazier Dixielanders Redux (with Pics)

Our own Doucanoe wants to try these as bass bins for his Altec/Fostex setup. But as you can see in the before picture, they have zero WAF.

Now here is how they turned out with a new coat of Mahogany. All they need is a coat of clear and RC will be good to go.

One more picture of them both together.

Wow. Really, wow. I've heard of Dixielanders, but I've never seen. You did a beautiful job! Those rival LaScalas in my manly speaker taste.

What was the original HF section like?

It had a horn mounted on top. I never heard them in one piece. I believe from RC that they sounded very good.

We will just be bypassing the crossover at this point and running leads to the 10" driver in these cabs. Nice thing is, if they don't work for bass bins, the horns can go right back on top and back to original and look great.

Noseeum pics.

I was in that original seller's garage looking at all four for $350, shoulda bit.

super nice job there, elmer. a friend picked up some frazier concerto's a while back, and i am quite serious when i say they are some of the nicest speakers i've ever heard.

I have the Frazier Mark Vs and am always on the lookout for the brand. What a phenomenal job you did with bringing those into a modern household. Inspiring.

Jack Frazier sure concentrated on the sound and quality of construction, and not the overall consumer-look of his speakers.

Lord a'mighty! Those are looking great Gary.

I figured from your earlier call, they were looking good but those have exceeded my expectations by a large margin :yippy:

I cant wait to get over to help out with the other and just see them in person. Sunday still works for me. Maybe even tomorrow?

Gosh they look great! Even If I wasn't happy with the bass performance, and Im sure I will be, I would almost have to keep them in there just on looks alone :thmbsp:

The Frazier's have (had) a compression driver and horn to cover the mids on up. Not as refined as the Altecs Im currently running but pretty respsectable with tubes. SS was a different story.

I just realized my company's firewall (I use the company server - free intraweb, but dialup) won't allow me to see the pics. Maybe in person some day? I'll bring the lefsa.

Beautiful job! They sure look better than the industrial gray Dixielanders that were constantly playing at my original audio hangout back in the late 60s.......Audio by Zimet, located in Roslyn, Long Island. Sid Zimet sold only Dynaco electronics, AR, Frazier, and Dynaco speakers. He would showcase the Dixielanders with some well recorded big band music. I could swear the musicians were in the room!
After climbing the AR ladder (AR4-2ax-5-3a) I finally picked up a pair of Frazier Black Box IIs, an 8" slot loaded woofer and a 3x7 compression horn.
I still have them and the sound is first-rate.......not, however, as good as what I remember about those Dixielanders. Good luck, and enjoy. :D

Thanks for all the kind words.

These were alot of fun to veneer and I'm more than happy to help out a fellow AKer when I can.

RC came over Sunday afternoon to veneer and listen to my new Tannoys. It was a great afternoon of audio.

I wanted to share the finished results.

I think that last coat of urethane you put on them today really did the trick Gary. Lets wait until you get back from your business trip and we will get them over here and do a proper set-up.

My hearts beating like a rabbit in anticipation
