latest experiment - German OB Baby !

OK - so my KLH OB line arrays are pretty much done . . and my hands were getting itchy, so here's the latest 'proof of concept' :

Based more or less on the JE Labs OB plans (I'm going to *try* and make my baffles with a mounting ring so I can use different drivers down the road):

with a sprinkling of Ikea tabletop stock (Mine are actually just shy of the JE Labs *ideal* baffle size - cost ? $4.00 each in the *AS-IS* area. !!! They are discontinued, so below is a link of the closest I could find):

and I've been DYING to use some of the German drivers I have kicking around, and have been inspired by this website in particular (check out the *Projects* area!):

SO . . . here's the crossroads: which fullranger to use: nice curvelinear coned 10 inch isophon woofer, OR to be different, 7 X 10 curvelinear coned grundig woofer - both have vented dust caps, which should help with internal standing waves . . .

tweeter will be a nice 4 inch isophon cone tweeter which has been used in lots of high end german theater coaxial units, and extensively in DIY (check out the German Loudspeaker website for the lowdown). I also might use a pair of the electrostatic tweeters for additional highs -anyone use them before ?

sounds like a plan . . . shouldn't take me too long to mock up. I figure I'll cut this pair just for the oval speakers, since I can always hit Ikea for another set of $5 - $10 baffles.

I'll post some pix as I make progress . . .

so, decided on which drivers to use: large oval Grundigs with 'Magnetfabrik Bonn' magnets; vented dust cap; paper cone with treated surround. tweeter will be some little isophon HM10's (paper cone, 10 cm).

I've drawn out on the Ikea baffles where to cut the hole for the woofer - used blue painter's tape on both sides to prevent any damage to the veneer.

gotta wait to break out the sabre saw until Sabrina the Wonder-Toddler wakes up :D

velly intelesting i believe i have a pair or two of older full range grundig or becker speakers somewhere ????/ I guess i will have to go a looking i don't have a ikea store within 90 miles of me though i guess i will find somewhere else to find the wood nice plans and websites looks like fun

as luck would have it, I didn't do any cutting; had a local friend come over (he's a music teacher and ex-opera Tenor - the guy I told you about Six Cats :yes: ) and I assaulted him with the maggie PP amp and KLH line arrays :music:

Months ago he was raving about Manheim Steamroller (I had never heard of them) and I actually found an album of theirs in FL - got him over to listen to it. Very strange classical / modern fusion stuff . . . VERY well recorded. (mhardy) I then played the Charlie Byrd 'Direct To Disc' record for him and he was floored - I was bragging about 'someone's' Eico / Bottlehead / Fostex combo playing it - quite a benchmark to my ears . . .

yammahamma (Boston pronunciation :D ) Our closest Ikea is about 60 miles away . . . the key is to find MANY reasons to visit - listening chair, LP storage, or something for the signifagant other- THEN you can justify the trip, and the Open Baffle purchase - works for me :thmbsp:
 
You never heard of Mannheim Steamroller!?!???!!!?!?!?! :-)

Their early albums were staples in hi-fi stores in the late 1970's/early 1980's... and their Christmas albums are... well, folks love 'em or hate 'em. I think I have four of them, on pretty much every imaginable medium save R2R.

But the most interesting thing about Mannheim Steamroller is that Chip Davis (who is Mannheim Steamroller for all intents and purposes) first rose to prominence as "C.W. McCall" (of "Wolf Creek Pass" and "Convoy" fame).

the album is (also) titled 'Fresh Aire V' . . there;s a whole insert on the 'Convoy' fame of McCall, and the histiry of the record company . . pretty cool : )
 
Damn !

so - can't type long . . . busy listening :music: BUT - a few things:

oval Isophons (about 6 X 9) are mounted, playing off the maggie 6bq5 PP; haven't even mounted the friggin tweeters yet and I AM IMPRESSED. WOW . . . a little beamy, and a definite change from the KLH OB line arrays but these sound REALLY good . . . bass is light (didn't make the baffles as large as the JE Labs pattern) but still 'there' . . . I have no measuring equipment, but my guess is these oval german drivers go up to the 5K -10K range, if not higher. cymbals are there, all the percussion sounds 'right'. just missing a little 'sparkle' on the high - highs . . .pictures to follow . . .back to listening ! :music:

Alrighty . . . mounted a single leg on the back of each baffle today, and I'm giving the little isophon cone tweeters a test run before I cut any more holes . . . initial impressions are pretty nice with the tweeters - crossed over at about 8 or 10K.

I don't know how I missed this thread ? Capt. Scary told me about your OPEN BAFFLE project, I did a search...very cool!
I too have been thinking about making some open baffles, however, I'm not sure what I would use for the drivers at this point. Ummmm, perhaps I need to acquire MORE drivers first lol! Ummmm, I wounder if those
EV SP15B's once repaired would do the trick ? Ooooh, btw, Capt. Scary is going to help me (if all goes according to plan) early tomorrow morning
(Easter Sunday) to pick up something BIG! Oooh baby, I need the TRUCK (and dolly)! I will keep you posted!

I had already thought of your OB speaker plight - the next time I come up I'll bring these so you can hear them - they are NICE . . . with a slightly bigger baffle (JE Labs standard size) and those EV's, you'd get some SERIOUS bass for an OB.

I have to re-do the legs on these, as one pulled out, sooooo, I'm gonna update the thread with the original mistake, and the fix :yes:
