Rega planar 2/glass platters

I traded an amp for a Rega Planar 2 with a glass platter & was playing a record for the first time at night. I glanced over and noticed what the lamp beside it was doing to the platter! Memories of science class :boring:, LOL.
Has anyone ever tried to mount led lights to achieve this?

Nope, but I bought a used amp and a previous owner drilled a holes into the base of each tube socket to install LEDs to illuminate the vacuum tubes in blue light.
 
I really like the Rega Planar 2 with the wood trim and "S" shaped tonearms.
They look real classy........:thmbsp:
 
I thought about doing this with my Systemdek IIX but haven't got around to it yet. I have a 120V light that I could piggyback off of the supply but I didn't want to induce any hum in the cartridge. The LED's would need a step down transformer which would also add a 60Hz magnetic field.... You would need to use a wall wart power supply running through a resister and straight up to the mounted LED.

It might not look too bad if you mounted the LED directly behind the platter. It was my intention to mount the LED below the platter on the Systemdek because it has plenty of room under there with the suspended sub chassis.

I just didn't like the idea of yet another wire comming from the deck down the wall to the plug.

I wish I could say yes but half the LEDs didn't light up and the others worked intermittently so I just removed em all, suspect heat killed them so wasn't about to repeat the same mistake.

Just for the heck of it I laid a mini maglite (with LEDs) on the plinth behind just behind the acrylic platter on the P2, guess what, same effect but the edge of the platter lit up in a powdery blue violet color, very cool looking!

What's "phat" Bill?

MuthaFunk, FWIW I tried shining the LED maglite under the platter but didn't seen to work as well as shining on the edge, at least with acrylic anyway.
 
Yeah, they would have to be mounted behind the platter. I was thinking of the LED lights you find in those ball caps would work & there batt. operated. Cut a curved (to match platter)piece of nice wood, stained to match TT, install lights in it & mount it with 2 sided tape. Might work?

Sounds doable, just showed the wife and she says, "it looks real nice." The Maglite has 3 LEDs and you cant really shine one but it appears 3 looks better than 1.

Just uploaded a pic, not great you get the idea, actually looks more purplish blue in real life.

I saw something similar on some new McIntosh equipment... a preamp I think. I thought it looked tacky. I like just the regular orange glow of the vacuum tubes themselves.

I do like the look of the light behind that platter on the turntable !

I also tried 1 light on mine & noticed that there was a dark shadow from the spindle. I think mounting 3 or 4 lights on the back 3rd of the platter might take care of that & allow it to glow from all angles.
I think I got myself talked into trying it :-). I'll post some pics when I'm done.

I usually don't go for flashy stuff but it looks so dang good, kinda like neon but maybe better.

willyrover, looks real nice is it permanently installed?

Ohighway, what I saw of the blue LEDs with tubes also didn't impress me, I like the simple orange glow too. On McIntosh, woulda' never guessed.

ace420, I got the spindle shadow too, your 3 spaced LEDs seems like a good solution. If you do it, please keep us posted and thanks for the idea.
 
There was a guy on Ebay selling non working vacuum tubes he converted into night lights with leds and a nice wood base. I wish I would have bought one. They really looked cool.
