Poly Jacket Covers, Do You Use Them?

I have some expensive/rare vinyl that came with poly jacket covers. They work really well so I ordered 50 online. The ones I got were quickly used up. They work relatively easy, even with double albums. What I like about them is that they are slick and make it easy to slide the records in and out of the shelf. Not only that, they will protect the mint covers and my precious old favorites from further scuffing.

They're not exactly cheap, especially when you add new poly sleeves to the overall cost, but well worth it to preserve the wonderful music and artwork for generations to come.

Something I definetely intend to look into once I'm back up on my feet. Admittedly not all of my LP's need it, but a huge portion of them would probably benefit from it.:D
 
I use them on all of my records. I have small kids around and it only takes one spill of whatever to make your records have a bad day!:tears: I also replace all the inner sleeves if they were thrift store finds after cleaning and if the original sleeve is paper. Cheap insurance.

I have a few poly covers, but want to do more (if not all) of my records. Once I get a good cleaning machine/method, i'll probably clean them, put the vinyl in new poly lined sleeves and add the jacket covers. I don't have tons of vinyl and would like to keep it that way until we own a home, so it should be manageable with a small collection.

Everyone's sources for these types of things would be great to know. I'd rather not spend more than necessary. www.kabusa.com is looking quite reasonable. :thmbsp:
 
Anyone else on the fence about poly-lined sleeves? I thrift-shop all the time for vinyl and can't tell you how many 'casualties' I've seen from poly-lined record sleeves. Though the area where the pvc leeched onto the disc usually looks terrible, I have yet to decide that the audible damage was readily apparant.

Paper has been known to cause scuffs too, so I'm undecided as to which I prefer.

I have seen that with the poly supplied by the record companies. It usually takes a good wash and scrub and vac to clean it up. The ones that I have gotten new from KAB don't seem to have the residue that the originals do. Paper scuffing seems to be a bigger problem.

Sounds like it was stored inappropriately (in a place too warm) and maybe melted or adhered the poly to the vinyl? is that what you mean?
 
I've only been collecting for a month and I've amassed close to 40 LPs. The greatest thing I could have ever done was grab a pack of polybags (100 for $20) from my local record store. The bulk of my collection is still very good to near mint, with a few in the good region. I intend to keep them that way.

I've been entertaining the thought of purchasing the poly lined dust sleeves as well. All of my Pink Floyd albums came with these and the records are still mint. Seems to be a great investment.
 
Yep, I keep all my records in poly sleeves. It really cuts down on cover wear and tear, especially when all the records are stored next to each other, I think. It also makes the records easier to pull out from a large batch, since plastic has less friction than cardboard.

If you plan on keeping your collection for a lifetime you might as well start taking care of it today.
 
I hate those things. I usually take them off. Then my daughter grabs them and puts them on her records. Fine with me.
