Hi
I just purchased and connected an old Pioneer SA 9100. After playing fine for about 20 to 30 minutes, I start to get loud crackling noise distortion from Left speaker. This is usually an indication that the protection LED will light up and shut the unit down. I'm no electronics expert, anybody have any suggestions as to what is causing this? I read some of the old posts on this unit in the hope of finding some clues.

Thanks for the detailed info. I'll refer it to a technician friend of mine. I want to get this Pioneer SA 9100 vintage unit to rock once again, like it did in the late 70's.

YOUR problem is most likely Q6 & Q7 in the amplifier, they are 2sc1451 transistors - some strange little metal cans with what looks like pieces of c shaped metal wrapped around them. These transistors have a bad reputation for a high failure rate, especially when operated at higher voltages.

2sc1451 metal case npn ebc 150v .05a 0.7w 130mhz 150hfe

These Fairchild KSC 2310 transistors:
512-KSC2310YBU TO-92L ecb 150v .05a .8w 100mhz 40-240hfe $0.11 ea
from mouser.com are the recommended replacements.

If anyone has a spare Pioneer SA 9100 amplifier for parts, I'm interested in buying one silver toggle switch for the Tape Duplicate button. My unit came with a missing switch.

If anyone knows or owns a similar Pioneer SA amplifier that has an identical switch please contact me.The missing silver toggle switch goes on the '"Tape Duplicate function" located right next to the Tape Monitor function.

Thanks for the reference, I see that it was a common part on many models. I'll search online hopefully I'll get lucky and locate one.

There is a listing on eBay "Lot of 5 Pioneer SX-1250 toggle switch caps " any idea if this toggle cap will match the other toggle caps on my SA 9100. On the Pioneer website, the switch cover No. AAD-040 that I need does not show the model SX-1250 as sharing the same toggle cap. Any suggestions.

I have the same problem with mine. I took it to a technician, they charged me $90.00 and still had the same problem. Brought it back a few times and still had the same problem, got tired of bringing that heavy amp back.
Its still here waiting for time to fix it.:scratch2:

Pioneer SA 9100 Amp worth repairing

Don't give up on this vintage unit. It is worth repairing. Get yourself a copy of the service manual online (it's free) and have a technician check out the recommendations posted last week on this tread. I have not had time to get my unit checked yet because my tech friend has been busy. He promised to look at it during the upcoming holidays. Keep me posted on any developments. I will report back on the status of my unit in the next weeks and month.

Pioneer SA 9100 left channel noise

Unfortunately, I have not had time to get my Pioneer SA 9100 repaired. To recap, the problem is the left channel starts to produce loud noise and the protection circuit shuts down the unit.
I have gathered plenty of useful information here on audiokarma. I noticed that in another post MarkTheFixer points out the following:

The 2sc1451 transistors are the most likely culprit. They have been failing in MANY different manufacturer's equipment - especially when run at elevated voltages and temperatures. The one that are NOT run at 1/4 watt dissipation and 30+ volt's don't seem to have as many problems. And only with some lots - possibly a process problem that has taken this long to show up.

replace them with this:
512-KSC3503estu to-126 ecb 300v .1a 1.2/7w 150mhz 40-320hfe $0.28 ea
from mouser.com

whereas earlier he recommended the following:
These Fairchild KSC 2310 transistors:
512-KSC2310YBU TO-92L ecb 150v .05a .8w 100mhz 40-240hfe $0.11 ea
from mouser.com are the recommended replacements.

My question is which component is the better replacement? Is there a difference between those transistors?

Mark will often find a better/more suitable component and post it for the members to see. Chances are good that the most recent post will be a better choice. Either should work for you though. I ran into this with the SA 9500II that I am working on now. I had already ordered the replacement transistors when a thread came out about a more suitable replacement. I have ordered that one today and will use it. Mark knows of what he speaks so I trust his judgments.

The 3503 has a larger case, so it will dissipate heat more effectively, BUT if there is a space problem fitting it in, then use the 2310, which has a smaller case, but it is still a larger than usual case (to-92L) L as in large...

It all depends upon the design as to how much heat the transistor has to dissipate.

The cooler the transistor can be kept, the better. At 28 cents for the larger, and 11 cents for the smaller, getting both makes sense...

Just wanted you to know markthefixer I have had my 9100 in my garage for almost two years and would pull it out now and then to work on it. I replaced all the outputs and still had the same problem with the weak channel. I followed your suggestions like the post above and gave it one more shot. I ordered the parts from mouser and replaced the 2sc1451's with the ones you suggested above and now it's working!!! :thmbsp:

Pioneer SA 9100

Just a quick update to say that I located a replacement toggle cap on eBay a couple of months ago. Now my unit is complete. Ciao.
