How lucky can a guy get?

Wow... I'll be damned impressed if you take the time to pull that bad boy back together instead of stripping it and calling it a "Parts" unit... thats rough..

Just the heatsink and case are missing

The tuner is removed and on the shelf now, same like condition, there was no case with this unit.

This one had more rust/corrosion but about the same condition, works like a re-caped unit should now.

Definitely have your work cut out, but still quite restorable, and worth restoring. I've seen a lot worse than that brought back to life. It will take a while, but you can do it!

Nice to see something in that state finally in the hands of someone willing to do it justice, and help it "heal"! Restoring it should be worth some "good Karma". Good luck! :thmbsp:

one foot out of the grave

More good news...I have determined that this unit was in a smoke free environment, is only missing 1 foot, 5 outputs, heatsink and a case and the tuner was likely never off and no past surgery… it is cleaning up nicely. Definitely worth restoring but still might be a donor. Will see how it goes in the next couple of weeks.
Thrilled for only $50

Only $50 to be able to get all that experience cleaning and restoring--cool! :D Seriously tho, it'll be awesome when you're done! Curious to see how it turns out -- best of luck!

Cleaning up well

R&R the transformer, without de-soldering and it cleaned up nicely. Brushed the Faraday cage and applied a trial coat of finish on a corner to see what it could look like. Vacuumed the tuner briefly and hooked it up to a working unit, it pulls stations clear and strong which is great news, Still going to be a month or so before power to the amp.
Only one lamp was out and I have to say how lucky can a guy get.

repaired broken speaker switch

The speaker switch was bent and one of the spine tangs broke off in my straightening attempt. Finding a switch might be costly and difficult to solder in, (did it once and don’t want to again).
With a spare Selector switch shaft, (about 6 “ long), I just chucked up the aluminum selector switch shaft in my Milwaukee drill, secured the drill in a vise and cut in the missing retaining grove ring with a fine pitch hacksaw blade and then filed in the flats and cut off the excess length.
Then new shaft gets re-staked and assembled into the Speaker switch, no soldering at all. Photo shows It's ready for finish clean/lube and secure in unit, should be perfect.
The top shaft in the photo shows the retaining ring covering the new cut in groove, (ring in place but not pressed in), should have taken a better picture of the machined in grove but was more concerned about losing the retaining ring.

Found while deep sea diving perhaps? I recently got a Pioneer SX-980 that looked almost as crusty, but it cleaned up amazingly well.

Oh, am I allowed to say pioneer in this forum?:D

Love the fact that you saw this as a project instead of a landfill donation! That's one thing about us collectors, we tend to look at a unit like that and see it in shiny, new condition. Kinda like having beer goggles on in a bar, but I digress. Great find! The spiders can find a new home :)

Real Toshiba's?

Show on left is original Toshiba 2SD424, right what came with the unit and bottom bogus.
The top two test good in all ways and the bottom bogus one has the right voltage also but fails diode test.
Is it possible that the output on the right side is a real Toshiba?
The unit came with 8 of them.
