Help! Scratchy equalizer!

I have a Marantz Esotec sc-6/Aragon 4004mk2/Tascam CD player setup, with an ADC Sound Shaper 3 equalizer.

Got two questions:

1. whenever the eq is on, vocals are scratchy beyond recognition, as if the eq brings out the worst in the recording. But when I turn the EQ off, scratchiness disappears. Your 2c?

2. For those who are familiar with the Sound Shaper 3: What is the deal with the lower set of knobs?

Your question is not clear as to what controls you are asking about.

The lower 3 position levers shift the center frequency of the EQ slider control above it up or down around the marked frequency of that slider.

The meter level knobs adjust the mater level so you are not too low or high when taking your readings.

The tape monitor knobs are just that, because the sound shaper 3 often is hooked into a system using a tape recorder loop and if a "new" tape monitor loop was not provided, you would lose the use of the one used by the EQ.

Thanks Mark T N2WAE. But when I play with those thingies, there is no response whatsoever. I have the eq pluged in through the tape loop - is there anything else I should do (except for having it looked at by a tech?)?
 
So?

Who knows how to solve that problem of a scratchy eq, that makes Dolly Parton sound like Louis Armstrong? Anything I try does not work.
 
It sounds like something is actually wrong with the EQ amplifiers. If both channels sound equally awful, I'd put my money on a power supply failure.

I'd have to agree. If it was bad sliders, then only one or a couple of bands would sound bad, and not necessarily on both channels.
 
I have a similar unit. Try reversing the in/out connectors. I made that mistake, duh!. Dubbing 'on', tape monitor set to 'source' and press the 'line' button.

Well,
the "out" from the preamp goes into the "in" of the eq, and the "in" on the preamp goes into the "out of the eq. If I reverse it, won't all hell break loose?:tears:
