They were out of San Antonio back in the 70's. Not sure when they folded.

Couple college roomies tried and failed at building their "Universal Tigers", twin mono amp kits (80 w as I recall). Both got close, but had to send in for final corrections. Pretty typical of these.

I later bought a pair of "Tigersaurus", twin 200 w beasts. Never did complete assembly as both passed the second checkpoint, but the first to reach the third sorta blew up... Still have them though, so maybe someday... :rolleyes:

I have an old mag article on how to build a universal tiger around here somewhere. Been meaning to revisit what is required to build one (if even possible now).
 
Not exactly but

I had a friend in college/grad school who built their digital delay line and a pair of their smaller ss mono power amps.

SWTP was an interesting company, into digital before its time... there IS a useful website with info on their products, albeit heavily biased towards the digital stuff as I recall.

I also had a college pal who built a pair of the Tiger .01 amps in the long skinny cabinets with the funky meters on front. Worked fine, and I thought about doing it as well. I ended up with a Dynaco Stereo 400 instead. A better match to my PAT-4 and FM-5 that I already had. Here's the page from the site mentioned above. They really were "unconventional."

Response, by most of the local electronic repair people, upon being presented with a SWTP Tiger for service, resembles the classic Monty Python skit: "AIEEE! Run away! FLEE! FLEE!!" :eek:

The biggest service nightmare I've heard about, involved one of these. Amp literally caught on fire THREE times, before the owner had enough of having it fixed, and took a .410 shotgun to it. Interesting design, but AFAIK, used components WAY before their time, before they were stable enough to handle the circuit designs. When they worked, they sounded great... for the 10 minutes before something went up in sparks, IME...
 
SWTP CD-4

I have a SWTP CD-4 phonograph preamplifier that I built back in the early 70's. In addition to being a preamplifier for magnetic phonograph cartridges it could be used with the Panasonic semiconductor cartridges. In addition to two channel operation it could decode the now popular CD-4 four channel phonograph records.

Including the power transformer in the same case with the rest of the circuit creates hum that is audible and annoying. Last year I finally moved the transformer to a different chassis and replaced the fairly simple and none to accurate zener plus pass transistor regulator with a LM317 three terminal regulator set to the correct voltage. I also installed heat sinks on the integrated circuits because they get pretty warm. I would recommend these changes to anyone contemplating using this preamp.

In some early-mid 80s issue of The Audio Amateur, there was a mod article that addressed some of the problems with this amp. Lemme see if I can find my copy (no promises though)

As for the old magazine article on building a universal Tiger, that sure sounds like a 70s vintage Radio-Electronics kit article.

The Tigers actually sounded very nice driving one friends large Advents.

On the other hand I was able to successfully complete one of these...

I'd never even heard of The Audio Amateur. I think I will also buy the 70's on CD collection.
 
I'm glad to say that I've come into possession of a set of these SWTP Tigersaurus monoblocks, the infamous "Frying Tigers."

They're actually pretty good amplifiers that are real sleepers thanks to the fear built around these. Near as I can figure, the Tigers were a bit difficult to build properly and set. Perhaps the legend came about from too many amateurs kit building these units and declaring it a design flaw when they launched into destructive oscillation? I know that two of my Tigers were competently built and had seen over three decades of regular, hard use (on a pair of very inefficient speakers) sitting idle only for about a year before I got them. Even now, they're working great, dead silent but very powerful Maybe my definition is wrong, but that seems pretty reliable to me.

A few weekends back when my neighbors were gone and I had friends over, I made good use of a pair of these monoblocks driving a set of rather inefficient Magnepan Tympani bass panels. It was punishing playback including Telarc canons, yet the Tigers loafed the whole time. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the amp on my more (~8-9dB more) efficient ribbons -- it became so hot trying to keep up that plastic plugs inside melted before it irreparably died. Wish it were as reliable as the Tigers.

As to the issue of these units catching fire, that is true. Poehland's "Odysey" article looks into this issue when he rebuilds a unit that became a "Tyger burning in the forests of the night." Evidently, the problem is due to a couple of resistors that were undersized in the original circuit (one run twice its ratings) that unsurprisingly have a tendency to toast. Combine this with a bank of bias resistors (putting out a couple dozen watts of heat dissipation) set on the board up tight to other components and things could catch on fire. Granted, he did encounter some issues with burning up transistors, but in Part II he acknowledged that was due to his using inexpensive replacements -- the original type worked just fine. With just the minor upgrades of larger resistors and moving the bias resistors up off the board and these become very good, very underrated amps.

The Tigersaurus is just such an unassuming (ie plain and/or ugly) looking amplifier that doesn't declare its power in big, bold white print on the front or relied on big flashy ads and claims. Yet, when measured by Benjamin Poehland, this 200 watt at 8 ohms, 250 watts at 4 ohms, rated amplifier was putting out 270 watts before clipping with THD+N at 0.04% and exceeded the measuring equipments range at 360 watts at 4 ohms.

Now here's something interesting: Poehland hinted at in his article that some of the 'inventions in circuit topology' of the GAS Ampzilla that came afterwards may have been copied from the Tigersaurus. Here's an excerpt from the Ampzilla website:

Ampzilla was created by world famous designer, James Bongiorno in 1974. At the time, James was the director of engineering at SAE. ... While at SAE, James conceived the concept of the full dual differential full complementary amplifier topology which has since, for the last 27 years, become the defacto world standard road map for virtually all high end power amplifiers made today. Ampzilla was originally designed as a construction project for Popular Electronics Magazine. However, the response was so overwhelming, after the rave reviews, that James left SAE to found "The Great American Sound Co. Inc." (GAS CO.). The rest was history.

I kind of have to wonder when I consider that Dan Meyer's original design and construction article on the Tigersaurus using a full dual differential full complementary amplifier topology was published by Radio-Electronics in the December 1973 issue and the kit made available then. The Tigersaurus then was just an upsized version of the Tiger .01 (numbered for its 0.01% distortion rating which evidently was a first and lower than the ability of most test equipment then to measure) using a full dual differential full complementary amplifier topology that he had described in the March 1973 issue. Any thoughts on that one? Granted, if true it would not be the first time in audio someone has claimed and gained fame for inventing some design that they ripped off from someone else. I do wonder.

At any rate, it is definitely an amp worth looking into. The Tigersaurus is probably one of the first true high current, low distortion designs to come about and uses a circuit topology that is found in TOTL units today with just a bit of refinement.

How about some pictures? The transformers are a modest 29lbs, which I suppose is sufficient to have two in a stereo pair of modestly rated monoblocks from the early '70s.

SWTP was put out of business when the first personal computer boom crashed hard - taking out nearly all the S-100 manufactures (IMSAI, MITS, not PolyMorphic though) and SOL, Ohio Scientific and SS-50 buss computers like the SWTP 6800, etc. etc.
I built almost all of their audio product line at one time or another. I used their 198/A preamp and Tiger .01 for years as my primary units. Traded the pre-amp for a H/K Citation 11 which eventually was sold on E-Bay. Still have the .01s. They sound very good but are in storage, now.

I once was playing with the 198/A and trying to figure out some better way to rewire the inputs and caused an ultra-sonic oscillation (through the .01 amps) that completely blew out all of my tweeters in my AR-LST's. From that experience, I learned how to rewind and rebuild them. I still use the LSTs as part of my surround sound video system (with a Pioneer Quad receiver - works great in discrete mode - and that cool "scope" display is awsome).
I did eventually figure out a way to improve the wiring and that was eventually incorporated into the later 198/As sold by SWTP.

I made money while in the service during the early 70's making and selling their stuff to GI's (mostly the "Plastic Tiger") At one point, my Master Sargent called me in and asked where I was getting the time to do all the work. He said everyone seemed to have my stuff. He eventaully gave me a room to convert to an electronics workshop.

Their strobe lights were pretty cool for the time, too.

I've still got some of the original instructions, etc if anyone is interested.

The only S-100 bus 'puter we had, in grad school days -- that I remember -- was a Zenith Z-100. This was into the 1980's, even after the H-89 (4 MHz Z-80A CPU) all in one that I built parts of for my adviser.

The good ol' days of effing with computers; when they made sense.
 
I feel quite lucky as my tiger 210's were a success with the help of a couple family members who were board level techs at the time. They did run hot tho and i suspect further tweaking by an amplifier tech could have easily solved that.

I sold them on the cheap after one fell victim to a "snapped" bottle cap. Remember that "fad"? The bottle cap went behind one and literally welded itself to an output transistor case and it's heatsink............. no guards back there so be very careful with wires/cables, or anything else conductive for that matter when they're powered up.
 
I had a Universal Tiger in college. I too needed help ... had a bias diode in backwards so it ran real hot!
I used it until I bought a Dyna 400. I have a long term (25 year) project to put it in a nice case with a real power supply. The Universal was an honest 60 watts per. In those days everyone had a 25 watt Sherwood receiver, so the Tiger was quite the amp. I blew it up once after 2 1/2 hours running a dorm party. It blew up on a J. Geils Band song, toasting my Dyna A25 woofer...actually I think the woofer took out the amp. At the time the SWTP magazine articles influenced me heavily when they wrote of benefits of this or that circuit design. Having only built Dyna kits for others, I became curious enough about circuitry to go into the business.

Heck, I'll take the whole preamp if you have it but I figure I would be pushing my luck asking for that.

Do any of you remember there little preamp? I had a friend who had one and it was running a Dynaco ST70 amp. It was pretty cool as it had separate pot adjustments for all the inputs. It sounded pretty nice.
