Pioneer SPEC 1 repair and restoration thread!

mattsd

Super Member
I got a SPEC 1 to repair and restore from fellow AK member r11cool. It quit working with a pop/sizzle sound when he plugged his iPod into the AUX1 jack, so I have to find out why it quit and get the cap and transistor list together for the complete restore. At this time, I have not been able to get into it very far, but I have found bad transistors, so we'll have to see what turns up with a in depth inspection. I will also be getting a SPEC 4 from him, so I will have a thread on that as well. Stay tuned!

Sounds cool Matt. I look forward to your restore notes! I also have a spec 1,4 and the preamp has static in its left channel I have still not figured out how to repair.

I did all 3 of my Spec 1's to EW's recommendations on the caps and power supply upgrades, outstanding pre-amps made better by EW.

It works perfectly! The transistors I thought were bad in reality were not, I had the leads of the meter on the wrong leads of the transistors. Oops. I'm going to be getting together a cap list for the recap and posting it on here, so stay tuned!

Matt, EW has done that and also highlited which are in the signal path for audio grade replacement. If you can't find it let me know and I'll scan and post the one I have.

I have a big pop when I adjust the Bass controls , if you don't turn the volume down while it will give you a mild heart attack .

I would like to know if any one in Norcal could recommend a good reputable repair tech . Thank jp

JP, start your own thread on that subject, you'll get more attention. However, look through this thread here, it might help you. Reputable service techs in your state.

And here is the recap list! Glenn, I know you have done a lot more of these things then me, tell me if there's anything that I should change or I should add. I've checked every cap and transistor in the list against the boards themselves, so it is 100% accurate, at least for this SPEC-1.

Matts , do you have a link maybe to the whole list of parts?
maybe one that in your basket?
thanks

you don't need that,
register for free, then
grab his BOM List as a text block with a control c:

I just ordered the caps and transistors to refurb my working Spec 1. Been wanting to do it for awhile now. Thanks alot mattsd for the list and new trick learned at Mouser. Man, makes it easy to order.

Did not hear from you your take on the sound of your Spec 1 after replacing the components. How bout it?
