SX-626 re-cap, and a couple of questions

Uncle Bambi

Funky Tut
A while ago I rescued a pretty little SX-626 from the recycler's pile. I figured that, if nothing else, I could use the amp/preamp jumpers and the two (:)) speaker plugs that were still installed on the back panel.

At first it was scratchy and didn't have any output on the left side, but De-Oxit fixed all of that. Since the lights pulse with the music (weak main filter cap?) and it has a few bulging caps as well as a handful of the light blue Sanyo caps, I decided to give it a re-cap and restore it to full health. I notice on the schematics that there are a pair of 725 transistors in there, so I'll be replacing them too.

A couple of questions -

1) any other "problem" transistors that I should replace will I'm tearing into it? I see some 2sc497, 2sa497, 2sc732, 2sc945, 2sc983, 2sa1312, and 2sc1344 transistors scattered about, as well as the output 2sc793's and the power supply d313's. I'm inclined to leave them all alone (save the 2sa725's, those are getting replaced)), unless you guys think some of the others might be problem children.

2) I'm going to re-cap the tuner, as many of the caps are light blue Sanyo's. Interesting anomaly, though - the SM shows the tuner board as an AWE-031, but my tuner is an AWE-011. I cannot find any schematics or other documentation for this board...... can anyone point me in the right direction?

Below is my parts list (sans transistors), in case anyone is interested. I'll be replacing the 2sa725's with ksa992's, and have the replacements already doped out for the other transistors if someone thinks it would be wise to replace them, too..

Ok.... Almost done. I've pulled the 2sa725 transistors from the tone control board and I've recapped everything but the amplifier board, and this little receiver is sounding very nice.

I was very happy to see some good results with doing the tuner. It was chock-full of the little pale blue Sanyo's, and wasn't pulling stations in too well. Now it's nice and strong.

I know that re-capping a tuner is fraught with danger if you don't have the skills and equipment to align if necessary, but reading archived posts about the blue Sanyo caps led me to believe I didn't have too much choice..... besides, this little guy really is isn't worth much so I wasn't risking a whole lot. Did I get lucky? Yeah, probably. But I'm sure glad I did it. :)

Hello everyone!

is it just me or is there an Error for the UKL1H3R3MDD1TA in the tuner awe-011???

I ordered this list, I am recapping and I do not have any 100uf capacitors like on my board but 2x UKL1H3R3MDD1TA.

below you can see that UKL1H3R3MDD1TA is, at the same time 3.3uf and 100uf.

Is the list ok or am I missing something?

thanks

good catch!! got past me HOW? many times....

my only defense, I didn't write that list,
nor have I come up with appropriate replacement transistors
replacement transistors are POSITION specific.
One location could be needing gain'
while another location (SAME Pioneer transistor part number) needs current drive
or heat dissipation - it depends ENTIRELY upon what that position is DOING.

I guess I'll resurrect an old thread...wouldn't be the first time. I'm trying to put together a comprehensive parts list for the 626. I have several threads saved with pretty much the same parts list, but for caps only. I've read some comments that point to the replacing of a couple of known-to-be-noisy transistors. And I've read about the .47uF vs 47 uF controversy. But I haven't been able to figure out a working parts list. The one(s) included in this thread help the confusion, but only include caps. Is there, as of now, a current parts list? I cannot find one that doesn't include a bunch of caveats after it is posted. Surely someone has this already?

hey tmab I'm about to work on one too. In comparing the different models it seems like most parts are similar, with later parts (1973) getting beefed up a bit in voltages. Raising cap voltage tolerance is common practice here. I havent found any glaring changes in cap values yet. There is discussion about transistors, but most are stock stuff. I have a note to raise the trimmers V1,2 to 50k. Dlucy added many resistors to his list, although it might be for reasons of getting quieter with metal films. I like to boost the wattage of any power resistors that get hot. I guess it boils down to just how comprehensive you want to be.

Hey, tusntuk2, yes dlucy's list is very comprehensive, and everything is not necessary unless you're going for a thorough overhaul. I ordered the whole list, fully expecting that some things (for the tuner, for example) just won't be done.

Why not do the tuner? Those caps are just as old.

When recapping, you should definitely include the tuner. Just stick to the original capacitance values. Returning the capacitance values to stock condition should not necessitate re-aligning the tuner.

I was also going to increase the output (coupling) caps to 3300uf

Increasing the capacitance of the output caps will alter or can the frequency response. In the hk 330B that I first tried that on, the bass response got emphasized. FYI

From other threads I had read it seemed like a good idea. i don't have the receiver yet, so it has not been tried yet. General consenus was favorable,

Yep, that's one of the best parts of AK: numerous opinions and plenty of interesting ideas to try out or improve on. Give it a try an d report back with how you like it. Rock on!

I have a 626 in my current rotation, and it already has plenty of bass. I have bumped up input caps wjen I recap a KA-3500 to get more bass, but my little 626 already has more then plenty. ( Well, I can't help it, I'm a bass player!)

Think I should stick with the 2200uf spec output caps?

For me, I would be considering:

  • 2200 uF 25 V (low) Nichicon KL series (best for audio) 647-UKL1E222KHD $2.13 each
  • 2200 uF 35 V (safer) Nichicon KL series (best for audio) 647-UKL1V222KHD $3.22

If you wanted to try more capacitance, you're only risking a little money:

  • 3300 uF 25 V (low) Nichicon KL series (best for audio) 647-UKL1E332KHD at $3.22 each
  • 3300 uF 25 V (low) Nichicon KA series 647-UKA1E332MHD at $2.24 or Nichicon KW series 647-UKW1E332MHD $1.84 each
  • 3300 uF #5 V (safer) Nichicon KA series 647-UKA1V332MHD $2.74 each
So, worst case, if you buy a set of 2200 and a set of 3300, you're out ~$6-$7.

Hey great, thanks Doug! Sometimes I do try things, like my very first project - recapping a Pioneer SX-727. I got it for $25, new parts were about $20, and I figured that even if I totally screwed up and it burned on the bench, that the education was cheap! It started this wonderful hobby. Oh, the 727 turned out to be awesome, and a great education, to boot.

I think I did jot down the 3300/35v UKA. Another AK'er had said it fit the PCB.

Thanks to your advice, I'll get another set of 2200's for comparison. Cheap education, right?
