CT-F9191 counter. What's the fix?

Hey guys,
I've been struggling with my CT-F9191 for a little while now. Issues with stopping after engaging PLAY. Length of time seems to vary. Finally removed the small belt from the motion sensing unit to the tape counter. Plays beautifully now, so, as I had suspected for a while, the problem seems to be in the counter unit itself. Tell me about cleaning, lubing or rehabing the counter unit.

As I recall it was the sensor switching unit itself that would wear out because of the way the belts from the reel and to the counter pull it in such a way the oilite bearings wear and drag. Taking off the belt to the counter releases some of the pull on the sensor shaft so it starts working.

Thanks for the reply. I tested your hypothesis by applying pressure on the shaft in the direction that the counter belt pulls, and, sure enough, the sensor unit "locks up" and tape play stops. If I understand the situation, I can continue to use the unit without the counter belt in place, but eventually it will fail again.
A couple of questions. Is the sensor unit common to other Pioneer decks? Is a replacement part available? Thanks.

The reel-to-motion-sensor belt could be stretched and loose. Or, the idler that drives the take-up reel could be slipping. Leave the cassette out, push up on the tape presence switch, and push in on the transport release button (I believe on the left side, under the cassette). Press play. After the transport comes up, you can release the transport release button, but keep pushing up on the presence switch (in the middle at the top) or the motor will stop. Now feel the torque that the takeup reel is providing. If it slips real easy, it is the idler. If not, apply reisistance to the motion sensor pulley. If it slips easy, the problem is the belt to it.

Thanks for the suggestions. There is very good torque on the take-up reel. Belts are new and plenty tight, so I believe Ed's thought on the fault being with the sensing switch assembly bearing is correct. That is part RSX-035. What are my chances of finding one. Failing that, has anyone tried to repair/replace the bearings in the sensing switch assembly?

The belt could be too tight.

Belts too tight could be the problem or aggravating the worn bearing drag. The tighter the counter belts are, the more twist there is on the pulley axle and the worn bearings.

There are two versions of the RSX-035, one is an exposed board with a white sensor housing, and an improved (?) version that's one-piece black. Also, the RSX-036 is just like the 035, except that it has one larger wheel as opposed to the two smaller wheels. The shaft is longer, but I remember there being enough clearance for it. To use an RSX-036 in place of the 035 you have to switch the wheels from the old part to the new part.

Thanks guys. I don't want to stretch the new belt too much. Think I'll wait 'til tomorrow and see if I can find an O ring of the right size that will be tight enough without being too tight.

I'm confused. The part shown in the service manual is RSX-035. You're refering to an RXM-035. Is this the same part?
 
Just a quick up-date for any interested. I went to the hardware store this morning and picked up a couple of O-rings, slightly larger (longer) than the counter belt. Tried those with the same result - stopage after a second or two. The shaft of the sensing unit has a good deal of play in it - obvious as you install belts. Thanks for all the input.
