Anyone out there using an MR67 tuner? Picked one up today for a decent number. Looking forward to having my first tube tuner. Lots of internal debate between the extra stage in the tuning cap, IF stage and AFC of the MR71 and the simpler MR67. However, the rumor is that the MR67 has the better sound, so went for it. Been solidly solid-state prior to this. Am wondering how to adapt my coax to the twin-lead inputs on the MR67. Radio Shack probably sells an adapter.

The 75 to 300 adaptor would do it but you lose 3 db of signal. That may not make a difference if you're already getting a strong signal. If you have a place to put it, RS sells a folded dipole for $4 that is terminated with the little spades, no adaptor needed, no signal loss.
 
When these are in allignment, you will be in for a real treat! :thmbsp: That is my favorite tuna for sound. And I definitely prefer the sound of my 67 to my 71, even though the 71 is a little more selective.
 
I sent my MR71 to Terry and he did a great job. He should be able to add a quality internal balun and a coax connector for you too.

The Sony ST-5000F that Dr_Audio redid for me beats it in sensitivity and selectivity but the sound on the MR71 is just a bit nicer for easy stations.
 
Think I'll do the mods myself. But it definitely is headed to Terry for an alignment. Cosmetically, I don't want to punch any holes anywhere that they don't belong. Will have to figure out an F-connector mounting scheme that 'does no harm'.

Anyone got any suggestions on the best caps to use in a tube tuner? Same as SS?

Ahh ... you don't want to start another cap debate here do you?

I had the failing caps in mine replaced with Auricap's and slept fine at night with no regrets. Do a a couple of search's over in the Mac forum ... IIRC ... this was debated at one time. Terry DeWick tend to like keeping caps of same lineage, such as Sprague Orange drops.

The most important thing to do is change the selenium diode as soon as possible, they are way past their time and can melt and damage your baby.

helloo friends,,,I have a MR67. I dont understand whats happening with the Muting. I turn the dial and it makes a lot of noise, as if the muting doesnt work. could it be a tube issue? Can anyone help? 6DS4? ( i guess that is a tube).

6DS4 is a nuvistor tube. I had one go in my 1500 and the channel went out, no other symptoms. The 6cw4 from my Fisher 500 works just fine as a sub. He may just have dirty tuner shaft bearings.

hey, is the muting supposed to only be a few dB instead of absolute? maybe he isnt aware of that...i guess in like my MR77 there is a mute option on a knob...maybe he needs to deoxit?
 
The tuner shaft bushings can make a whole lot of racket if they are dirty. They will make the noise when turning the shaft dialing in a station. Often you can reduce or eliminate the noise by running it full sweep back and forth many times.
Chemicals if need be but never get anything on the fins or it will go way far out of whack. This is my thinking from what little information he is giving.

6AV6 is the muting tube and there is a muting adjustment pot on the back panel, right behind the 6AV6. Can't miss it. The 6DS4 for sure has nothing to do with muting.

And no, the muting isn't absolute on a '67 like we expect with a more modern ss tuner.

Good idea about cleaning the tuning "clips" on the end of the tuning shaft.

COATO, el tubo que se encarga del muting es un 6AV6 y hay un potenciometro atras para ajustar el nivel del muting directamente atras del 6AV6. el 6DS4 no tiene nada que ver con muting.
