Metallic "tick" from altec horn?

I think I'll try and avoid pushing too much into them and breaking it loose..

However, I did something really stupid yesterday, and fed my reverb the reverb signal and got one HELL of a seriously loud and almost damaging sounding feedback... Thank god I didn't freak and freeze trying to figure out what I had just done, and was fast with the fingers, and it was very short lived.. but sure did make me worry a second about trashing horns..

It's my understanding, and seems logical, that what usually breaks the plugs loose is extreme cold, and likely the fast transition of temperature causing the metal and plastic to contract at different rates.

I've never broken one loose from use, and i assure you i've abused a few to the point of destruction of the diaphragm. I can tell you firsthand what it sounds like when the diaphragm impacts the phase plug under power................. it ain't pretty.:no:

The tangerine phase plug is under the diaphragm, as Zilch said, stair down the throat with a flash light and you'll see it through the mesh screen. Maybe this image of an 802 will help?? Dave.

AAAHHHHhhh.. thanks so much for that breakdown. I was looking for one earlier today trying to see how these were assembled.

I knew these had a phase plug, but the horn you pictured was just so much different looking I didn't think it was even close to the same construction.. and now I understand :)
