JBL Speaker Project

Yowza! It's amazing how well those new woofers match the waveguides.

I liked the look of the white cones but I think they look amazing with these. And I am liking your new legs too. I wonder if I can have some machined like that for my project. I know originals are about impossible to find.

How do they sound compared to the other drivers?

Yeah I thought it looked cool being able to see the aluminum frames and white cones through the grill cloth. But sound quality overrides looks.

Well Zilch said the new woofs will play cleaner down low and a bit flatter up high. Plus they are rated to handle something like 6,000,000 watts compared to the 100 of the LE14A's. They are still breaking in a bit but so far they sound flatter up high and cleaner down low. :D

The sound improvement was pretty noticeable right from the get go. Down low at least they are a lot cleaner sounding. Not that the LE14A's are bad, far from it. I think the LE14H-3 will be a perfect match for the 2452H-SL's. :yes:
 
How high does the center of your waveguide end up from the floor now that you have the new legs installed?
 
The centers are 26 3/4" above the floor. The JBL legs are 5" high where the original Ikea legs are 6" high.

Thank you, I really enjoy them and it was a fun project....that still isn't finished. Planned upgrades are:

Flared ports from PE.

Flush mount the woof, waveguide, and ports.

Dynamat on the walls.

Internal bracing.

Added weight underneath the rear of the cabinet. They have always been a bit front heavy and with the added weight of the H's I'm afraid they might tip over. Adding another 20+ pounds of weight should help couple the bass to my slab floor since I'm not using spikes.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Those LE14's are great woofers for any project. Even a refoamed A version sounds fantastic. But the LE14H-3? Oh, my oh my. I have one pair of H-3's and keep moving them from one project to another, and replacing them with LE14A's because of cost. Now it seems that the LE14H-3's will be used in my Altec Seville cabinets. Maybe there is no end to all this foolishness. I can't afford 6 pairs of H-3's.

The build quality on these far surpasses that of the 14A. The baskets are overbuilt compared to the 14A. Zilch, what's the weight difference? I'm sure it has to be 5-10 lbs. I've been just playing them in the background on and off all day and will give them another serious listen later this evening.

Reading over the specs the impedance curve shows the ohms dropping to just above 7. But the specs show 8.94, 5.94, and 3.37. What is the average and lowest these bad boys drop down to?
 
Consider the impedance curve definitive.

The DC resistance (Re) is 5.9 Ohms.

That's what you'd get (+/- the manufacturing tolerance) measuring across the terminals.
 
Just stumbled onto this thread and man, those speakers look beautiful! I imagine they sound just as good. Great work, Duffinator! :thmbsp: It truly is amazing how much better the JBL legs look. :yes:
 
Last night I heard the best sounding set of horns ever.The first thing that caught my attention was an impressive sound stage with seemingly endless detal in insterment placement.They where toed in and some what closely spaced,so there was alot of convergance in the sweet spot.I could tell these classic styled beautys where just begging to be spaced out so they could preform there majic.With nice easy on the ears highs mids to die for and bass to spare tonealy they where nothing less than sweet and smooth,so unlike most horns these where very differant in there total presentation.I have never been much of a horn guy till last night,even Zingali's costing $10,000+ did not impress me as much even driven by gear in the six figure range.These speakers had no sighn of that horn tunnal or honky sound what so ever.
These carefuly crafted custom JBL driven wonders where desighned and built by our own Duffinator and Zilch! I can honestly say I fell in love with these horns and that majic can still happen outside of the main stream.
 
goraman, thanks for stopping by last night, it was a fun evening. I moved my speakers around last night after you left and was impressed with the improved soundstage. Thanks for the tip. :thmbsp:

If you are interested in a pair send Zilch a PM, he has a source but they can be difficult to come by at times.
