Tandberg TCD 310MkII Won't Play

Spoke too soon. While it looks like it's working fine - I hooker her up and tape plays in ssslllllooooowwww motion. Guess I should have ordered that belt or at least tried the one I have that's about a 1/2" shorter. Wish I knew what the spec on that belt should be.

Hiya Shacky

Cape Town calling...again. Could be the cassette doin' that. Have you another cassette to try? Otherwise try FFWD (WIND) and rewind to see if the cassette is A1. The TCD310 MK11 is one of the fastest winders I know of.

Nope not the cassette. I just made it last night on my trusty H/K CD191.

Great news I just put that spare belt I had laying around on. Could tell right away it's not too tight - so old one was really worn and stretched.

Put her back together and she is singing like the beautiful Norwegian she is  All seems fine. Thanks for all the help!!!

Again I jumped the gun. Made a recording and played back - sounds like a$$. Guess there's more to do.

Still speed problems. Do they make pinch rollers for this model? And what is best way to test for belt slippage?

Been cleaning the pinch rollers this morning. Already had rubber cleaner/rejuevenator. Now that it's running I'm able to clean the pinch roller with unit in play so I can get it good. Starts to slip when liquid is present but after I dried it I don't detect slippage. So I'm hoping problem is/was dirty pinch rollers. Will let it dry for a while then give it another try - with fingers crossed

Now that I know how to do it this is a very easy unit to work on - at least for basics.

I have English 1 page brochure - Njord, I'll scan it when I get my computer back at work - it's out for replacement

Anyway wanted to ask what you think of following point in brochure:

Self-Adjusting Input Amplifier
This novel self-adjusting input amplifier was specially designed at Tandberg's Radiofabrikk. While conventional input amplifiers are optimized to a particular program source and are often badly matched to other program sources, this amplifier adjusts itself automatically to different program sources (radio, record player with ceramic pick-up, amplifier, microphone). The result is something that can not be achieved with conventional amplifiers: a full dynamic range and absolute minimum noise from the input circuits - regardless of which program source and which recording level are used.

Marketing hype? Or true unique value to Tandberg?

I went over those pinch rollers a second session just to make sure. It's playing tapes I recorded on my H/K extremely well. Will try recording later. But looks like good cleaning was what was called for.

Tandberg TCD310 MK11...

I would like to have an English version of the OM but I think there's many pages. Some interesting bits about the self-adjusting amp. I'd like to know how they did that. This deck records superbly, as you will find. I hardly need to use the Dolby facility as it's very quiet on replay with minimal hiss.

Btw, the serial no on mine is 4404817.

Happy New Year

My serial # is 4406956.

Have to wait for my work laptop to come back - hopefully Friday. It's what I use with my scanner. Will scan the English OM and Brochure as well.

It also talks about why Tandberg stuck with meters on their decks.

Wow that is a lot of work on a 310. I had a TCD-3014 and did a belt replacement on it too, and it was not fun. But, when i did, all was good. replaced the gilmore head azimuth belt too. Hope you enjoy you TCD310 for a long time. :)

Holy cr$p Batman!!! Just made my first recording after getting everything up to snuff. Started with vinyl copy of Boys and Girls by Brian Ferry - recent acquisition from Klownskool  :tresbon:

Best I've ever heard in a cassette recording. This has got to rival a Nakamichi in performance.

Also - I'm thinking about all the posts here about cassette recordings sounding better with vinyl than CD. Wonder if that has something to do with the above statement about input amplifiers being optimized for specific source - in old days vinyl was the prime source - and Tandberg developing an adaptable input amplifier? Could esplain it Lucy :scratch2:

I am excited you got it to work - well worth the effort!

Although at the time of launching the TCD-310 Tandberg had not yet reached the very pinnacle of its cassette deck development and offerings, it is an exceptionally well designed model perfectly capable of holding its own against some of the very best decks in the market.
