That might become a minor problem, its pritty much down to the CD-1 if you whant to keep the period and that is even pushing it.

But for the looks, just go with any of the monster Yamaha CD-Ps.

A really sound and solid and heavy piece of gear.
Hard to believe it is a +30 years old design.
 
i posted most of these pics on Mark B's PC5002M thread, but i'm bored at work so i'll post 'em here too for posterity. this is the cosmetically rougher of my two, before i finished dusting it.

underbelly of the beast. if you look closely, you can see they factory-installed bypass caps on the PS caps (did they do this on other higher-end Yamahas?):

as far as the sound quality goes, i think Ferris Bueller says it best: "it is so choice. if you have the means, i highly recommend picking one up."

I don't know if other high-end Yamaha amps were designed with bypass caps for the PS filter caps. The PC5002M uses 1µf 125V mylar caps for that purpose. From what I've read about the PC5002M Yamaha made design decisions with it that seem to fall into the audiophile category. For example, the power transformers are orient core, and wound with OFC. The power cord is ultra-low impedence and made of OFC. These are interesting touches for an amp manufactured in 1982.

130-odd pounds. Damn near gave me a hernia when I was carrying one of them and took a wrong step (I couldn't just drop the amp, of course!).

The pics with the dolly were from the day I got the amps. I may actually install them on dollies like that and put some blocks on the wheels. It'd be a heck of a lot easier to access the rear that way.

The MX-D1 is a wonderful sounding amp. It's also very nice to have 500wpc available on demand.

It uses Yamaha's own MOSFET outputs, and has a characteristically warm MOSFET sound.

With a foot in the pro world I can't buy that argument sorry, it is only the consumer world that has forgotten about stereo.

Or put in a diffetent way: music don't have to come with a picture! most forgot about this in the mid 90's and BPC 5.1 was all over the place. But not in the pro world.

The "problem" in the pro world is that now everything turns to self powered speakers, after class D amps got to the audiophile quality they put the amps in to everything. Soon we can wave goodbye to stand alone power amps, unless it is for "vintage" speakers.

BTW. I am still drooling over that silver A-1.
