Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I am beginning the design of my E-waves with 2226's. I am planning to build a curved sided enclosure for aesthetics. Is there a recommended cabinet width for proper response? I was planning on making the cabinet about 18" wide.
Also I would assume that the center of the woofer should be placed as close to the horn as possible. Is this correct? I don't have a height picked out yet but will probable shoot for a 4-5 cubic foot enclosure tuned to 38hz.


Great idea, you are about to creat a monster E'wave, I ve tried it with 2225H and it was great. Good luck and dont forget the pics!

I think I will eventually need advice on how best to properly attach the screw-fit drivers without overtightening with damage to the WG.

I talked to a guy yesterday and he is thinking about putting the Ewave horn in the mouth of his JBL 4530 scoops. What happens to the sound if you put the mid/tweet right in between the woof and horn mouth? It should be an interesting experiment.
 
Look closely; all of mine do, and it is quite thin. If you find they leak, use foam gasket tape....

Yes it is there on the mouth flange but no gasket or other resilient seal in the throat at the driver mounting.
I don't want to overtighten the driver to prevent loosening from vibration and risk damaging the WG. I know you all have done collectively hundreds of these, this will be my 1st and no point in my doing something destructive thru ignorance.

Sorry, I misread your question.

If there's a gasket in the throat on any of the JBLs, I'm not aware of it. I don't believe there's one on the Pyle version, either, as we had a similar discusion about that earlier here.

Most anything we put there thicker than a paper gasket will alter the geometry somewhat, to what effect, I have no clue. It has just not been an issue to date.... :dunno:

Can you provide some details, please? Your crossovers are very nice; it looks like you've built them in a machine shop, and those flush grilles have a very "up-to-date" esthetic character. :thmbsp:

What happens to the sound if you put the mid/tweet right in between the woof and horn mouth? It should be an interesting experiment.

Right now I have a CD horn +JBL 2441 between the woofer and horn mouth on Jensen Imperials (the 5' tall ones). This works well.

The next thing I will try in that spot is some 25" wide 9" tall Yuichi A290S:

They are on the way. As big as those horns are, they won't be a size mismatch. The Imperials are about 38" wide, so that leaves half a foot on each side.
 
Well I took the plunge and ordered a Behringer DEQ2496

It was about $250 on That Auction Site. NIB with full warranty. The main reason is I want to duplicate the EQ curve of the KEF 103/3 speakers. I have 2 pairs and only one of the necessary KUBE EQs. I expect the DEQ2496 to outperform the KUBE's TL072 based analog circuits, especially using a digital input signal from a CD transport. That's actually an attractive signal path: All digital from the source to the output DACs of the Behringer, then through a passive attenuator to the power amp. Should sound great. I love the 103/3 speakers but I suspect the analog EQ is a weak point.
The DEQ2496 also can do lots of fancy stuff that solves problems for me. Like custom compression and loudness curves for listening at low levels.
I will not be buying a microphone just yet. I need to get the thing in the system and set up doing the one job first. If I had the whole measuring rig I'm afraid it would be a huge time sink learning to use it and then fooling with every speaker in sight. Eventually I'll use its many measurement functions as an evaluation tool but right now I don't have the time to get into that yet.
 
I'm interested in building the econo waveguide speaker.

I have a pair of Eminence Kappalite 3015LF woofers. Will these work well, or should I sell them for something different?

I replied earlier about not thinking the 3015LF would be an especially good woofer choice because of (1) not having a low enough f3 in a decent-sized enclosure (2) not really having a good smooth on- or off-axis response that's high enough to meet the crossover point the waveguide needs.

But after reading more posts in this thread it's become obvious to me that 20 Hz or 30 Hz isn't often anywhere near parity with a lot of other woofers that are being used for the Econo-Waveguide projects anyway. In other words, not all listeners are after low frequencies in their Econo-Waves - maybe using subwoofers for that if desired instead. So point #1 is moot for many.

That still rules out the 3015LF because of point #2, but the smaller Eminence Kappalite 3012LF looks like it will fit the bill very well indeed in a box 2 cubic feet or larger. It's a very nice driver!

Yeah, I was going to ask what mic and pre is recommended for this. As far as products go I have no problem building a pre and power supply up from schematics if that's the cheap way to go. Because of the strange room I'm working in I don't think I'd actually use the Auto EQ but it would be quick and efficient to optimize crossovers with this thing.
 
Behringer ECM8000 mic, no pre, plug 'n' play, at your local Guitar Center or equal, $50.

Negotiate for a free 18' XLR mic cable to connect it.

I do something similar to your plan. The CD and DVD are connected digitally to the DEQ2496, my tuner goes in the analog input, then digital EQ and out to my line stage. Works great and sounds better to me than the DAC's in the players. I only EQ below 200Hz for room modes. Made the bass so much clearer and it subjectively improved the midrange too. You'll have a good time with it. I haven't had good luck with the auto Eq. It seems to want to boost the treble to the point of earbleed, but you can always just back things down a bit.

Push "Room Corr" in AutoEQ processing, and it will put a gentle downward slope into the curve, ~1 dB/octave, as I recall, to match the "Ideal" in-room response.... :thmbsp:
