Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

From my perspective after listening to JBL 2225 an LE14A compaired to the HPM
woofer I actually prefer the HPM woofer for it's "beefier" bass performance I get.

Both the 2225 an the LE14A work well and sound fine in a different type of way,
but after living with the HPM I have grown quite found of it's sound, even using
a sub with the 2225 I still like the darn HPM woofer better on the Ewave..:dunno:
 
Wow Kegger thats interesting.I knew mine were dam fine sounding but I
didnt want to scream, shout and brag too much being a newbie around here.
 
Tweaking Econo-Waveguide

Hi guys

I've been enjoying my speakers. Thanks to many of you. I did a little experiment yesterday. I took out the bug screens of my drivers. And it seems like the high sounds better. Do you think my head is playing a trick on me? Has anyone tried this?

Just wondering.

- If you ever buy one as an example could you please post a few pictures of it. ( I'm wondering if it's actually made by JBL PRO / or if it's outsourced by them ) .
- Whichever case it actually is, the specs for it read very well ( for a SR project ) .
- If you do proceed with a build & end up making your own front-fills / be aware that it's worthwhile to maintain absolute polarity ( for both top & bottom components ). - This criteria ( for live work ) is different than what you'll typically find with home audio projects / such as the core design behind this thread.
- That's the most siginificant reason ( I can think of ) to just copy everything from that JBL product ( components , horn, crossover design ) that Zilch posted.

Probably head trickery, but if it sounds better to you, it is better.... and best of all, it's free.

I think u R right. In fact I tried this with Altec 806s. I could not tell the difference then. But somehow, I hear the difference with the Selenium drs. But I can't verify this. So it may just be my head.:D
 
Avid Ewaves

Hello Ewavers,

...just thought I would sneak over here from the Classic Speaker Pages to let you know there is another pair of Ewaves in the world.

I chose a pair of 1979 era Avid 102's, a speaker I happen to like very much, so this was a leap of faith and curiosity. The cabinets were extremely easy to prepare for the 12"X6.5" waveguide (I used the MCM version). The Avid woofer is an excellent acoustic suspension 10 incher, with many of the same attributes as the Large Advent woofer of the same era. I went with the bi-amp option, and made a few adjustments to the woofer section of the standard Ewave crossover (.85mh series inductor instead of the 1.5mh inductor and a 6uf cap instead of the 12 uf parallel cap...oh, and a 12ohm/20uf zobel).

Between battles over at CSP, Zilch managed to provide much appreciated assistance. Thanks Zilch!

I have only begun playing with them, but they are proving to be very enjoyable, and a worthwhile project!

The Avid cabinets were very easy to work with. They are sturdy, as are their mdf grille frames (which require some modification and new cloth).

The woofer coils are also former AR parts. They are AR #4/.88mh coils, minus a few turns of wire, that were used primarily in the AR-3a and early 4x. AR coils were wound with atypical 17ga wire.

If I do this It may have to continue on here if I do not use all JBL but I might. Need to check out the HF driver price.:yes:
I do think I will get one at least if for no other reason than just to see it!!:D

dont know if I missed it but is there a response plot without any crossover ?
Need to know the sensivity of the raw ewave system.
And is there any way of getting more spl (stacking?)

Check the Selenium datasheet for the sensitivity spec, 109 dB, I recall. We use ~6 dB of that to do the HF compensation in the high sensitivity version of the crossover, ending up just over 100 dB. They're going to have excessive midrange and limited HF extension if you don't use the comp filter.

Note that the sims are done at 10m. I suspect the lobing will be worse closer in.... :dunno:

Looks like you almost can't lose with those. 1.5 - 3.5 cuft, 30 - 20 Hz, respectively. Try 2.0 @27.6 Hz, 1 3" vent, 9.5" or 2 2" 8.75".

Really cool actually because after you click on any of the speakers, the next link gives the schematics of the speakers and as you scroll over any part, it tells you what it is and you can order the individual parts

The HPR152 loudspeaker is a horn/15" driver speaker that goes for $1K online.

You can buy the horn ( 90x60 ) for $7.79 and you can buy the 1.75" compression driver for $59.49.

Seems like an alternative route maybe and I think the website is extremely cool.

But while I'm not in love with the high end on these 901's, I have have to admit that the bass & lower midrange is exceptionally fun.
I don't think it would be possible to make something like this work though. Not when you have to use the EQ to make the speaker function properly. And the EQ would just screw up the highs after econowaving it.
