Is that a MCS set up with a 3710 tuner?
Well... the Biggest E-Wave (at least, I think) system is up and running!
This pair of speakers sort of takes the concept full-circle... taking the JBL-design horn (which was originally used in the TRX-series PA cabinets, of which the TR125 dual-15" cabinet was probably the most common model), and putting it BACK into a pair of dual-15" PA-type cabinets... but this time, with the far-superior Selenium horn driver (which is much better than the JBL 2412, IMHO) and the better-tuned E-wave crossover.
The cabinets are 4 feet tall, 21" wide and 18" deep, with dual TOA 15" woofers. Bass port tuning is around 27 Hz, with an f3 of right at 30 Hz. Efficiency is right at 96dB, with a power handling of around 500 watts per cabinet (I will wind up running these on a 300w/ch Carvin amp, when they go into use at Anime Weekend Atlanta in our large special-events panel room). I used the greater-than-95dB crossover variant, though I probably could have used the original version (with the L-pad turned all the way up, ostensibly).
I haven't gotten to extensively listen yet- when I was testing them yesterday, the only available amp was an old Fisher solid-state amp, which was MAYBE 30 watts. But, even with that, these things were satisfyingly dynamic and pretty detailed. I did wind up making them 2.5 way (added a second woofer on a 4mH choke, tacked into the LP output of the E-wave crossover), and I did have to add a Zobel (ostensibly due to the relatively high inductance of the TOA woofers) to the lowpass output of the crossover, but the balance came out pretty darn good, the first time. Might wind up trying the lower-than-95dB crossover, or something between that and the high-efficiency version... but even now, these things just meld and play very well as systems!
In short- the E-wave system worked as advertised. :thmbsp: Should have pictures of the cabinets (they're big, and they're red!) tomorrow...

Just to the right of the speakers, there's a Carvin F600 amp (which will be the amp that drives them, long term) and a Nakamichi CD4 CD player, just waiting to do a "smoke test" on them. Though, I think it will be the asphalt smoking, not the speakers.
They should get plenty loud, and still do their thing!

Edit: I agree with Zilch, that if you plan to put the power to them big time, the crossover resistors need to be higher wattage. But then, you already know that!

Yes it is, I find the MCS stuff to be quite good. I really like the 3865 amp, an under rated gem.

Edit: I agree with Zilch, that if you plan to put the power to them big time, the crossover resistors need to be higher wattage. But then, you already know that!

That's a really sharp logo. How did you make it?
I re-did the grilles with different fabric. I bought a super stretchy knit made for swim and dance outfits. It's attached with double sided foam tape. It's quite transparent but everything behind it is black so it works fine.
Grill is much nicer now! This may be the best looking advent mod yet. I'm going to have to find myself a set of these old Advents.

Thanks. You won't have to look far. We're practically tripping over them around here. You can use the narrower New version if you're not adverse to either undercutting the edge of the bezel or trimming the rim of the waveguide for clearance. Either Utility version works as well. If you don't want to make grilles, a single 24" X 24" sheet of self adhesive walnut veneer will cover 2 baffles. I'm working on a Secret Crossover Trick for Large Advents that I may reveal here in the next few weeks.
The nice thing about how they're going to be used, is primarily for voice... with short snippets of DVD playback, in a panel room. The 300w amp is probably actually overkill... but I did want to avoid the possibility of clipping, if someone momentarily gets overly enthused and shouts through a mic.
I'd doubt they'll see more than 50w each, in any sort of continuous fashion.
Oh, BTW: These (the E-wave speakers), in our parlance for our convention gear, are actually the "Little Reds"! Our "Big Reds" have dual-18" Tonegan woofers, dual 6.5" Eminence Alpha 6 mids, and an Eminence APT150 horn tweeter/supertweeter in a WWMTM setup... I built the Big Reds about 5 years ago, and they've been in use at AWA since then. They're 6 feet tall, 24 inches wide and 18" deep, and handle about 700 watts each, with 102dB sensitivity and an f3 of about 35 Hz! They're used with four bandpass single-18" sub cabinets (it took that much bass to keep up!)...

Compute the cross-sectional areas and compare. It goes as the square of the radius, and it looks like you'll need 4 - 3" ports to get equivalent, 2.83" to be exact.

That appears to be a trim ring around the woofer; there are likely screws behind it.
Looks like you've just got 6" x 6" max where the tweeter is located. If so, there is an E'Waveguide that will fit.... :yes:
