Pioneer CS-77 Score! One Dead Tweeter :(

Just got back from a CL run. I picked up a pair of CS-77s for $30. Unfortunately, There is no sound at all coming from one of the tweeters. Other than that, they sound great. The cabinets will need a little TLC, but for $30 I'll take what I can get. Would anybody happen to know of any diagnostics I can do to see if the tweeter is actually fried?

They came with the grills, but I forgot to take pictures of them.

Hook the tweeter to something with a very low output, like a laptop or similar. See if you get sound from it by not including the crossover.

It could be possible too that the pot on the crossover needs to be cleaned with de-oxit, and then the tweet may start working...

If you need, you can find a tweet on the bay. I used to see these parted out all the time. Not sure if they are still out there like that though.

I wonder if you get a chance to listen to many speakers though.. CS-77's are ok.. but MUCH better out there..

Thanks I'm going to try what you suggested to see if they are fried. I also have some Deoxit on hand.
I guess I did over hype these speakers by calling them great. I hooked them up to my Marantz 1060 to give them a listen and I thought they sounded pretty good. I also have a pair of HPM 100s and KLH 17s that sound much more accurate than the 77s.. The 77s actually kind of remind me of Sansui Sp-2500s.
 
Yep.. 100's and 17's are gonna sound a lot better. I had a pair of 77's I picked up looking like brand new and in the boxes. Just too pretty to pass up.. I sold them for what I got them for.. They just weren't what I was really into, but I wanted to give them a listen and they were cheap. They sounded very similar and looked about like a pair of Sansui SP-100's I have.. No idea why I still haven't let those go either... but I've had them for quite a long time may be why.. they were free, and look pretty damn good too...

Just too much bass, and not enough high for me...
 
I have two sets of the CS-77s and a couple pair of the SP-2500, and I will tell you they are very fickle about which receivers they like. The Sansuis do seem to like Sansui receivers, and sound real nice when all four are hooked up to an old Sansui quad. So, if you have any other receivers available....
 
Yeah.. I got a QR-6500 just sitting around to go with the SP-100's... neither in use.. I've just seemed to have moved way past receivers and and small speakers..
 
1) Set the meter to read ohms.
2) Disconnect the wires from the speaker terminals.
3) Touch one probe to one of the speaker terminals and the other probe to the other speaker terminal.
4) If the multimeter reads infinite ohms, your coil is shot or disconnected from the terminals. Read the ohms on your good tweeter to see what the ohms are, probably around 5 ohms. If you get the same reading on the bad one, then check the crossover, your tweeter is OK.
