KLH-6 - Measurements

The truth is none of the speakers are boomy. The Advent has better bass... cleaner deeper and has less distortion. But they are all pretty good.

The difference was not terribly huge and "boomy" is probably not the correct description, but it was the only word I could think of back in the 70's to describe bass that seemed excessive to me.

Placement is critical, the Advent sounds best against a wall on a short stand. In a corner it will sound boomy. It actually sounds thin in the middle of a room. The Advent reveals how good it is with the best electronics and source material. It sounds mediocre with mediocre electronics.

Please note the highlighted text below. It denotes an opinion. It's generally bad form to tell someone their opinions is wrong.

Now, any idea why classic KLH's and Advents always seemed to sound boomier to me than their equivalent AR's?

The wrong room or bad placement can make a normally balanced speaker sound boomy. Could that have been a culprit?

He has his opinion I have mine. I see no bad form in that. It is bad form to criticize someone in a public forum. There is a pm function on this board. We are all worthy of basic respect.

Definitely a possibility. I mostly heard the big KLHs and Advents in dealer demo rooms and offices. OTOH, that was also where I heard the ARs. Perhaps the ARs were just less sensitive to placement; I know I haven't had many issues moving mine from one home to another over the years.

You stated your opinion as truth, quoted below.
Maybe a different wording would have avoided any misunderstanding.
Nah, I got it. Everything expressed here is opinion, even if the person saying it thinks it's truth. :)

I don't think that's true. (sorry, couldn't resist)

Zilch, get some more measurements up, wouldja? And where's my picture?

I have a pair (or two) of all of the speakers mentioned in this post. In my subjective opinion, sound quality is strongly influenced by speaker placement and elevation off the floor. All of the speakers (mentioned above) sound better elevated. When placed on the floor they sound different (in a negative way). Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Kloss boxes; have a bunch and listen to then elevated (love this antique equipment). I am sure that other speakers, especially younger ... highly engineered and more expensive products (like JBL's L100) sound better and are better. But, the Kloss boxes work for me ... actually when carefully placed - work real well. Just my opinion, though.

The L 100 is also an antique. It was made in the early 70s. All of these speakers are highly engineered. Many of the Kloss boxes were also expensive. The Kloss designs have nothing to apologize for.

Would you mind adding the Indignia bass response just for giggles? Am interested how a modern woofer in a smaller vented cabinet compares to the vintage acoustic suspension speakers.
With the port closed is a better comparison.

I think the difference in the perceived "boominess" of Advent bass vs. AR3A, might be the choice of stuffing/damping material.

The AR3 used either rock wool or fiberglass; the Advent usually used foam rubber blocks.

IME, fiberglass is superior; IIRC, some people here who have substituted fiberglass in place of the foam rubber blocks in Advents seem to have come to the same conclusion.

I'd think that a good, easy tweak for an Advent, would be substitution of fiberglass in place of the foam rubber... it's easy, it's cheap, and its reversible easily if you don't like it...

Regards,
Gordon.

I live in New England but am not from New England, l was talking about what I perceive to be the "anti NE sound bias" flashed here occasionally with a speaker engineer/builder who worked with and for some of the greats out here and he laughed it off and said the NE sound won the war a very long time ago. This is a guy who to this day builds tweeters and woofers from raw material. The EPI 100 was one of the purest and simplest designs of all time, I prefer that to the KLH 6's, but the gap has really closed, I fired the 6's back up last night after reading this thread and they do really well.

I'm a musician and have met other musicians that were really good, yet we disagreed on sound, I've met sound engineers that I agree on sound with, and others that I think are tone deaf, but I think in the end we're all different and there is no "right". Hell, the very fact that no 2 ears are exactly alike, and ears are mechanisms for picking up sound vibrations out of the air...dictates that different people are going to perceive sounds differently. If someone will send me some JBL L100's, I can put them against my KLH, Boston Acoustic, EPI and Genesis Physics head to head, and I promise that I might not econowave them, if they beat the Genesis, I'll eat my own dirty underwear.

Zilch,

I'm continue to be amazed that the little Indignia matches or beats the much larger KLH-6 down to 35 Hz.

Just curious.....would like to see an Indignia port open vs. port closed graph to see how the LF response changes. Or, does the port adulterate teh nearfield measurement?
