Yeah, somebody doubted earlier whether the thread would ever hit 500, and another member scoffed saying we'd be there before the end of the year.

I'd love to get a good-sounding used pair that someone made - where they loved the way they turned out, but upgraded to something even better when they could. I'd be thrilled to find that. I just don't have the cash right now, other wise I would start this project. From what certain members have said, these end up sounding awesome if the right parts are used. I've never been a huge fan of the horn look, but a couple of old Wharfedale W60's or W60E's (or Acoustic Research AR2ax cabs) would have the nice grills to cover the horns with and would be perfect for this. Especially the W60E, I think. The cool thing about this is that your options are wide-open. You can choose as big or small of a cabinet as you want (within reason) - if I'm correct about this. Great idea for a thread. It's the type of thing that the B.A.S. would be doing back in the '60's and '70's.

Hey Gang, if you look at the members projects you will see many where the horn does not show. I am #10 on the list and when I put my grills on, you can't see the horns. As far as money goes, I bought my ESS AMT1Cs for $220.00, took off the Heils and turned then into eWaves for just under $200.00 then sold them for $600.00 and still have the Heils.....which I think I will be selling so I can buy a pair of Ionovacs. The swapping never ends.

I love swapping. Swapping rocks. And I love the look of the grills on my W60E's. They're dark-grey or black/dark-brown on the W60E, unlike the white/creme ones on the earlier W60 model from the late '60's. The black grills go beautifully with the walnut cabinets (and that reddish color). I really love that look. There's a really-nice pair on the 'Bay for $179 (which is a decent price for those, considering what I've seen them go for), and the pictures really show-off the grills/cabs quite-well. I bookmarked it just because I thought the pictures were cool (I'll have to save the pictures or print them). They make the speakers look "beefy". This is one of the reasons why I love the look of traditional speaker designs so much (traditional, yet cool - Understated, yet not generic - Hip-looking - Speakers that a beatnik jazz critic would have been proud to have in his living room - That's the look I like - The sound is a different story though).
Hey, am I going to be confined to a sort of West Coast sound, or can I get a vintage sound East Coast/British/whatever-kind of sound out of these?

Kind of what I did for my 15 inch JBL 2235H setup. Just used the LP of the JBL 4430 monitor, which is around 800-900 hz or so...dont know if this driver has a peak or not, but that's where JBL saw fit to cross it over, so good enough for me. They're losing directivity above that point anyway. ( Also have the 4430 zobel...)

Now that Jack's heavy into a new crossover for a new and improved "E'wave",
The whole thing is getting a new breath of life. Not that the original E'wave doesnt still kick ass, this is just a natural progression of the lesson it taught.

I may have to do something like this to my 4507 boxes. While performing yesterdays "high volume resistor heating up test" I began to notice a raspy resonance. It wasnt affecting the drivers output, just laid on top of it. On closer look, one of the QSC waveguides had slipped down just a little, and it was vibrating against the cab edge. Only occurred with VERY loud volume. Problem solved with a small piece of lumber wedged under there, still allowing the guide to "hang over" which should be helping with the alignment issue.
The 2235H drivers can really shake things up!:yes:
