Pioneer TX-9100 tuner Cab Rehab

I picked up a beat up Pioneer TX-9100 tuner this week for $10 on a flyer. I had one years ago and wished I never sold it, so when I found this nasty one for $10, i took a shot.
Well aside from darn near all the lamps burned out, it seems to work. I wipes off the crayon from the faceplate and it doesn't look too bad, but the case is a whole 'nuther story. I was told it sat out in a shed and had got wet, so that explains a lot. Including the 4 mud wasp tubes in the upper left hand corner UNDER the hood

Here's what the case looks like now and the rear vent after I brushed sanded primed and painted it. Hopefully some new walnut veneer will do the trick.

The case:

The rear vent repainted:

I've got some raw unbacked flitches of walnut here and have contact cement drying on the top right now. More pics shortly

This looks a lot better, eh??

And after a coat of boiled linseed oil to "pop" the grain and add some depth.

I agree... nice job.

I am also a woodchuck hobbyist and that's nice.
When I first saw your "before" pics I was thinking build a new one from scratch.

Sweet!
That is a mighty fine tuner, I had one over here a couple of years ago and it really had a great balance. The 9100 has most of the bits under covers, IIRC. That might ease the cleanup part, I'm thinkin'. Good luck with the tuner.

That looks great Andy. It always pleases me to see an old piece come back to life.

Thanks guys!!

I'm going to let it set a couple days to give the BLO a chance to dry thoroughly. Once dried, I'll hit it with some orange shellac to warm up the walnut a bit and then a couple coats of gloss Deft with a final coat of satin.

Now I know who to go to for veneer work and reedging.

Nice job, Andy!

BLO really doesn't give much protection, not that shellac and Deft will make it bullet proof..

It's pretty much the same finish as on my Econowaves, except for adding the shellac. The orange in the shellac will just warm up the coolness of the walnut a wee bit more. I've got a leftover scrap I'll test it on first.

If you want to warm up the Walnut grain, Watco Teak Oil is a good solution. I used it on a couple of projects, including a pair of Walnut veneered JBL's and it really shaded the grain nice.

I'm a big fan of orange shellac. It does things no other finish I know of can do. Good looking work, Andy. I've got the same job to do on the case of my SA-7800 that I just got back from MarktheFixer.
