Help ! with EV crossovers !
Whats up everyone !
I am trying to put together a pair of EV Aristocrats ! Yesterday I contacted Bob Crites about some parts and recapping my X8 and X36 crossovers. Bob informs me that he believes these are potted in tar. Does anyone know how to get the covers off these so that I can get a look ? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can deliver.

Good luck Steve. EV set the crossovers in those cans then poured tar-ish type stuff in them. It will be easier to find the schematics from those (available on the Telex site) and build up a freash pair of xovers.

I have an X36 with loose internals and always wondered about how to open it too? Maybe heat?

Another AK'er that is very familiar with EV said he didn't think that was the case. And I was Hoping he was right. ![]() I see nothing is gonna be easy 'bout this project. Or particularly cheap either. I really want to complete this project, I found out last night that I'm gonna need diaphram's for my T-35's, and some different compression drivers for my 8 HD's. Now this...

From the .pdf that DJ posted, "components are potted in thermoplastic asphalt". That means that heat will be needed to get the crossovers broken down. It will be a flat-out mess trying to get all of that out of the steel cans, I'm sure. If they can be measured to see if they are within specification, that would be the best way to proceed, I'm thinking. If the networks are known to be poor performers, a new crossover would be the way to go.
If you're getting towards the end of your budget, you could buy an active crossover and save a few bucks. It might be an upgrade to the passive networks. |

I wouldn't recommend trying to unpot the original XOs.

One thing to remember Steve: I think!!! that the original caps were oil caps so they might still be fully functioning. Give them a try. The xovers are worth more as-is. I just sold a pair of X36 to a guy in Korea for $180.00 plus shipping. For that price you can get an active crossover and play with the xover points to your hearts content.
