I agree that this sounds a like processor/memory related issue. I have only experienced one computer with Vista and it ran far slower than my 8 year old Thinkpad with Windows 2000. There is just too much crap running on Vista and so the memory and the processor are struggling to keep up. Look into Windows services on the internet and see if you can find a list of services that can be turned off. This will buy you back some of the processing power you are missing now.

IIWY, I would also look into upgrading your memory. The more the better.

Do an control/alt/delete to see what you have running . I think you can still do it on Vista .
Processes ,Applications and Performance and such .

On mine the stupid McAfee will start a scan and screw up a file sometimes .

Or try another program to do the file recording maybe .

If you are still getting the dropouts, try to disable any network and/or wireless adapters, those are notorious for hogging system resources. As others have said, get more RAM if possible. You can also download a free program called DPC latency checker and see if your computer is running into issues.

I'm in agreement with others here. Might be something running in the background you aren't aware of (that has no need TO be running, at that) that you need to change the run setting on. As with others, I found that laptops aren't ideal for running Visa.... I "downgraded" my laptop to XP and things ran much smoother and faster.

Thanks for all the replies. I started systematically turning things off, many of which were, as suggested, unknown by me to be running.
I think I'll axe the nortons and get a better ripper and player, too.

I was surprised at how much crap was running in the background.

There was something called windows defender which I couldn't turn off, but I made some progress short of killing norton altogether.

Again, thanks to all. This is a great board.
