Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Didn't mean to slight the new stuff, I am just in a VERY cost consciencious mode now. The original is SUCH a GREAT DEAL. And of course the performance is amazing.

I built my first set of ewaves with a derelict pair of Advents and $80 worth of parts thanks to group buys and parts on hand. The next set were better because I upgraded to D220Tis. Maybe veneered cabinets made them sound better as well. I'm looking forward to trying the next upgrade when the QSC WGs arrive. Probably in Valencia cabs first with the Dayton Classic 15" woofers. Maybe we'll have a set sorted out for the next AK Fest. I'm curious about modding a set of PH612 to take bolt-on drivers directly but I have only 1 set of PH612 on hand. If I order from PE soon I'll get another pair to hack up.
 
That would be great to hear the QSC. I look forward to that. I used the Dayton Classic on those barrel speakers I had. It is a great woofer...not just for the money, but in general. I would use them again in a heart beat.

I figured I have waited this long for the QSC's what's a couple more weeks? My main project is almost identical to yours with Valencia cabs but I'm using the TAD TL-1601's. I'm just waiting for them to finish sorting out the new crossover and post the schematic. If you want another set of Pyle wg's MCM electronics is super fast.

My Val cabs are scruffy ones modded for PA use. I probably wouldn't decide to experiment on a good pair but these are disposable. I'll certainly have to make a new baffle to get the drivers positioned correctly and probably cut away part of the original horn enclosure to get room for the higher woofer position. Not big deals overall. This will free up a pair of D220Ti that I have in there now and I can convert another pair of Advents - for something.
I'm a little concerned about the upper range of the Dayton Classic 15" matching well with the WG. It gets kinda hairy above 1Khz. I've never worked with Zobels before but I assume one will be required in this case to control that peak at 1500 hz. maybe a notch filter would work better than a Zobel to preserve the response above the peak.
The upside is the woofer performs beautifully in the Val cabs with one port plugged. This is the 'textbook' cabinet for the specs of this driver. The bass is nice and clean down to the 30's. I'd really like to end up with a 2-way that can play from 30 - 15K relatively flat and be powered by one amp. My current ewave-like setup requires 2 amps, 2 line level crossovers, 3 drivers/channel, passive crossovers and 4 cabinets. Sounds good but very complex.
 
If I remember correctly those were the woofers I was going to originally use in my Barzilay cabinets. I ended up buying some 2213H's from Russell for that project. I couldn't pass up the deal he gave me. I think I have way too many projects around here. I'm going broke.

Notes:

1) As previously, eWave XO slightly overcompensates this DE250 on freestanding QSC waveguide.

2) QSC w/eWave highpass rolls off both DE250 and D220Ti at ~20 - 22 dB/Octave acoustic slope.

3) With LE14A lowpass, acoustic crossover occurs at 1.53 and 1.56 kHz, respectively.

4) Drivers in-phase, with the waveguide 1.75" forward, the system acoustic center is 3" below the waveguide axis at 44" mic distance from baffle.

How did you determine the acoustic center to be 3" below waveguide? Doesn't on axis with tweeter look better?
 
What is the acoustic center angle for a baffle-mounted "standard" large Advent EWG (WG cut-out incorporating the tweeter opening) ? Curious about correction by bringing the WG forward on a baffle step-out insert and also bringing the WG ajacent to the woofer.
Addl; has anyone tried the 6X6 JBL on a large advent EWG? If so, what was the ACA?

It's durn close, I would say, yes.

As found previously, as I recall, it's 3" below the waveguide center, i.e., the tweeter axis, thus still within the waveguide.

To find that, I inverted the polarity of the HF driver and moved the mic up and down to find the location of the deepest notch. 1/8" either side of that height, and it is not so deep. Note also I switched to "unsmoothed" to dial it in precisely (Orange).

At that point, having smacked myself in the head for not doing this first so that all of the measurements would have been done there, I reversed the HF connection and took a new measurement (Violet). You can see that it is nearly identical to the previous one, next graph above. There is somewhat better summation with the woofer just below crossover being one difference, but not enough to warrant doing everything over.

At that point, I clicked the minimum phase button and saw that it was good. Those determinations were made with D220Ti, BTW. Should I go back and do the same with DE250? Yeah, but it'd be more worthwhile moving on with both woofer and waveguide mounted on the same baffle in some fixed alignment.

These measurements confirm Jack's findings that inverting the polarity of the compression driver in large part compensates for the horizontal displacement of the driver acoustic centers when using the deeper QSC waveguide. Do I know where they actually are yet? Only by inference.... ;)

I don't believe anybody's done large Advent with the 6" square waveguide, which is quite shallow, implying that the horizontal offset of acoustic centers would be different. Would I suggest the HF might even be ahead of the woofer when mounted on the same plane? Not without measuring to find out.

My own pair are OLA chamfered with the 8" square JBL waveguide, which is deeper than the eWave standard PT. It would be interesting to compare; with its constricted flare, I can't begin to guess where the acoustic center might be. In both of these cases, the large Advents are originals, with wider C/C distances than news. Plenty of news around here, as well, but I may be doing something else with those. I consider smaller, shallower systems like AR4x, BA60, KLH24, etc. more appropriate platforms for the 6" square PT, which we all apparently agree is an excellent performer.... :yes:

For those at home lurking, the wavelength of the 1600 hz crossover point is 8.25", meaning that 180 degrees of phase compensates for 4.125" of linear displacement.


My original pair of ULA Ewaves is going to a shootout with a pair of Heresies on the weekend. My thoughts about the Heresy are on record and I'm really glad to see this matchup happening.

The owner calls them 'Fake JBLs' and plays them daily. I predict another nice pair of Heresies on eBay soon and a pair of OLA Ewaves being built. Got all the parts right here...

Heresie IIs were my main and only speakers for 12 years. I know them well. The waves will WALK ALL OVER THEM!!!!

LE10H woofer is six-month-old recone. It's black because pro kit was $17 cheaper than consumer one. The white-faced originals have some life left in them thanks to looneytune2001, and they'll probably go back into those cabinets eventually.

The stiff wires are 18ga thermostat cable from the home center. Chose solid wire for the mockup with Zilch-nutz in mind. The proper circuit boards are on their way.
Squint and you can barely see Theta clipped onto C1 & C3, since I had them lying about.
(The black can beneath the highpass is N1200 and fits in the hole below. That's all I'm gonna say about that ... for now)

They became my first DIY speaker project when college roommate suggested the horns were honkin' too loud and we should try disconnecting them. I liked it better without, and they've been unplugged since. Randy liked 'em a little better too, but not well enough. At the semester break hauled his orange L50 to the dorm and proceeded to rock my world.
6x6 waveguide should fit in there just right :scratch2:
Might have to save the LE10H for the inevitable not-so-econo project that I won't be able to resist, having had so much fun already....

That's a $7 Walmart cord, but not the name-brand one the audiophools are buyin' :D

Whoa!! Spam is having some fun!! That is great when that happens.

This morning I tried using several values of inductors for L1 in the standard E'Wave crossover, and have found nothing that will cure the roughly 5 dB bump at 2 KHz that the DE250 presents. Using 1.5 mH will definitely change the FR of the DE250, but by the time the capacitor is adjusted to bring the crossover back to 1.6 KHz, the bump is still there. I have tried values of .6 mH, .85 mH, 1.2 mH and 1.5 mH. None seems to cure the overshoot, when properly adjusted. The DE250 looks like it would really appreciate an acoustical crossover about 2.5 KHz.

Judging from my trials, it is not going to be that simple to fix. The series notch filter used by me to correct most of this bump doesn't have a capacitor because it is needed as soon as the hi pass begins feeding signal to the tweeter. It doesn't completely cure the bump, but makes it more tolerable. I wonder if it can be completely flattened at the 1.6 KHz crossover frequency we are using.

The bump I have is below crossover, and coming from my LE14A woofer. I'd be pretty happy with the DE250 response but for it being overcompensated, much as I found earlier. I do hear the extra "sizzle" above 10 kHz.

None of that's definitive until I get everything on a single baffle and in the same box using the DC300 woofer, so we're measuring apples and apples here.... :dunno:

Dang it!!

Talking about apples and apples reminded me that I went back to the B&C 12PS32 woofer. And it doesn't crossover like the DC300. So I disconnected the woofer, and look what the DE250 response looks like.

Wheres that darn bump? And that is without any capacitor for C3. The hi pass values are 1.1 mH and 3.5 uF.

Maybe Gordon DID put us on to good thing. A little more tweeking this afternoon might get us there..
