Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

My Selinium D220Ti drivers were delivered at lunch today. I guess I didn't know what to expect, I'm amazed by the heft of them. I suppose I thought they would be much lighter. I like it, the mass feels good in the hand.

OK - I just scored a pair of Rat Shack 12" woofers from a really cool friend in Charlotte, NC. Below are the specs. Are they going to be acceptable for the project?

Well I've found another pair of LE14A's and I'm thinking of building another set of Ewaves...

I notice the DE250's are on sale at PE right now but looking back through the posts it looks like they might not be usable low enough to mate with the 900hz crossover for the LE14A. Is this the case are have any of you used these two together successfully?

I'm using DE250's with the JBL waveguide and LE14A woofers.

I like the DE250 a lot. I also use the Selenium paired with LE10's and I would give the nod to the DE250's. You get what you pay for there.

Depends on which model they are, and how big of an enclosure you can use.

Some of those RS drivers have very high Qts factors... which makes them suitable only for very large boxes... given the low efficiency (88dB) and smallish magnet (17.8 oz) of this woofer , I'd suspect this is one of those cases...

The original speakers were sold with plugs for the ports so they could be used sealed or ported. If you keep the original woofers try it both ways before deciding what works best.

First you have to find out if the original woofer will work for ewave. It will have to have decent output up to 1600 hz. Since the original speaker had a cone midrange and a complex 4-way crossover it's unlikely that the woofer was used that high by Marantz. Probably the only way to find out is to test it.
Or decide to change to a woofer that will work in that cabinet and is known to perform well with the ewave top end.

Depends on which model they are, and how big of an enclosure you can use.

Some of those RS drivers have very high Qts factors... which makes them suitable only for very large boxes... given the low efficiency (88dB) and smallish magnet (17.8 oz) of this woofer , I'd suspect this is one of those cases...

Model 40-1034 and will be using Marantz 77 boxes.

Thanks for the info. In helping this newbie, what should I do? Other drivers, porting options, etc????

High Qts could also be good for Open Baffle. That might be interesting. obWave.
 
Well I finally got around to finishing my Cerwin Vega Re 30 E waves:banana:

It all fit really nice, the crossover screwed right on the back terminal where the old one was. It still has the fuse too:yes:

The L pad fits perfect in the hole where the tweeter was, and the grills still fit :D

These work as advertised, I just got these done and Im already planning a bigger better version:music:

Those are straight DOPE!! Great job and nice looking E-Waves. I'll bet the bass response is awesome. :thmbsp:
 
Please explain "Open Baffle." Are there other options with these boxes?

Open Baffle is just a board a couple feet square, maybe a little bit taller than square, with a hole cut in it and the speaker mounted in that hole. The back is totally open. There are ways to figure out what size the board should be but they have a very open sound to them. Mostly run with subs though as the deep bass can be lacking. If you are not a slam-you-in-the-chest rocker, they sound great.
 
very cool Steve, right from the start of this thread, I thought CVs would make great eWaves. Match the great bass of the CV with the great mids and highs of the wave, and there you go....Bob's your uncle.
