Just for fun, stacked Bozaks and Fraziers

I have been relegated to watching my youngest son today, so between feeding and playing, I decided to mess around a little with my Bozaks. I have had a pair of Frazier Monte Carlos that I have wanted to stretch out, too. So, after first trying out some small Pinnacle bookshelves, I hooked up the Fraziers. The efficiencies between the Bozaks and the Fraziers are very close, and the voicing isn't too far off.

The Pinnacles are way too inefficient and don't sound right, in comparison. By themselves, though, they were impressive, for as small as they are.

Anyway, I started out listening to a good public music radio station. The music sounded good, but I don't have a very good tuner in this system. So, I hooked up a CD player I had laying around and listened to some folk acoustic music. The Bozaks have always sounded good for this genre and have a very wide open wall of sound kind of characteristic.

The Fraziers are much more forward and actually blend quite well with the Bozaks. On a whim, I pulled out Herb Alpert's Definitive Hits. My son and I like to play chase through the house when some of his older stuff is playing - the rhythm section is always tight and upbeat. Anyway, the horns sound absolutely stellar through the Fraziers! The Bozaks fill in the bass that the Fraziers are missing.

This is fun!

WOW! Nice looking set-up! The fact that the Bozak height matches the furniture is great! Those are regular Monte Carlo's and not "Supers" correct? I thought I had a pair of Super Midgets that I got from Joe b/c they have the 3 sided finish & feet on them. I don't think I can rotate the logos on my Super Monte's. My regular Monte's have beige muslin grills.

I'm very anxiously waiting to get ahold of the Frazier product literature Dave has. Frazier must have had at least 3 different of their various models over the spectrum. Not sure how many models they had either, 16, 18?!

My Fraziers are the Monte Carlo A models with piezo tweeters. For comparison of the Monte Carlo's two-way design, I also have a pair of Epicure A120 in another system. Winslow Burhoe, designer of the Epicure, is famous for many reasons, but one is his matching of the tweeter and woofer in his "module", requiring only one 10uf capacitor to smoothly transition between the two drivers.

Well, because of the piezo's natural ability to roll of the low frequencies, the Monte Carlo A's have no crossover components! Frazier did a great job matching up the drivers on this speaker. The woofer has a very nice roll off on the top end that blends very well with the piezos. The Epicures, overall, have a bigger, smoother sound. But, the Fraziers have a great quality all their own.

The Bozak furniture comes from Barzilay, a well known speaker cabinet manufacturer from back in the day. I love the cabinetry! The original owner had purchased the cabinets and console and then loaded the Bozak B302a system. His wife helped. They were sorry to see the equipment go,but I assured them I would take good care of it and play it regularly. These Bozaks were what got me into this hobby and brought me to AK.

I rescued another Barzilay console this summer to use as a TV stand in my home theater system.

Right now, I am listening to the Beach Boys - sweet! The harmonies on "In My Room" are thrilling me with this setup.

Would certainly like to hear that combo.I have some small Pinnacles also and by themselves they sound very good with a muscular Sansui 2000x.

The top end is more pronounced. The mid-range may be a little on the strong side - I am fooling around with the tone controls a little to compensate. By having the Fraziers on top, the vocals are all right at head level. I am listening to Nora Jones at the moment. Her voice is an aphrodisiac.

What model Pinnacles do you have, superdog? Mine are the AC 400. I picked them up at Fry's years ago and have never really used them. They surprised me today. I am going to find a home for them. They are inefficient and do need a big amplifier.
 
Yeah with the stacked combo I can see or hear the vocals being pronounced at ear level.Nice speakers you have there.I love these vintage speakers for vocals and older jazz.I have the Pinnacle +6 model.Small bookshelfs speakers but sound very nice.Found at a thrift for I think $6 if I remember correctly.
 
I stacked my Bozak 302 urbans with Dynaco A-25's with I thought very interesting results, especially with vocally oriented music...

I love this hobby
 
ESS 9's are atop my Symphonies. I have not tried listening to them at the same time, they just look super. Very different speakers, the ESS are rock speaker types and the Bozaks are just about everything else--so switching between them depends on source genre.

Had the ESS hooked up to the Luxman R-1050 but I loaned that one to an AKer so the Onkyo 8500 will go there or maybe the M-4.

I think the only speakers I have with crossovers that look strangely sparse but sound exceptionally good are the Fulton mid modules and the HH Scotts. Both of those run the bass driver full range and count on 'natural' drop-off of the drivers.

[edit - this is false]Both are acoustic suspension, unlike your Fraziers(?).

How do you like your Lux? I have 2 of these and Todd Crane is always going on about them. I also have a 1070 with a bad output module that I need to fix. I really like them.
 
Well I really like Luxman, have R-1040, 1050, 1070, and 117. Would have more but they don't come up often locally. My L-55A integrated hums so it sits...

My 1070 is also fritzy-- a pwr switch and probably more. Sounded better than my 2238 or the 2270 I heard, but then I like 'neutral-er'.
 
Okay I would like to read a detailed explanation of what Hemholtz did.

I was wrong, must have been late when I posted that, my Symphonies are infinite baffle and the ESS nines have a very small port, looks like the one in my Infinity 2000A.
