Marantz 2325 dead ruin. What would you do?

Hi everybody!

I cheaply bought a Marantz 2325 before it was shipped to Nigeria. It was standing in the snow during the night. :scratch2:

It is a ruin and as far as I can see, the following parts are missing:

1. Front plate plastic inlay.

2. dial pointer broken.

3. The metal piece above the tuner string.

3. Dolby switch is broken

4. Power knob is missing.

5. Bass knobs are distroyed.

6. the left little dolby poti is not original any more.

7. phono pre amp is partly distroyed by a hammer or something. (but not that bad)

8. overall very bad condition. rusty transformer etc...

Well, the positive thing is, that the lights are burning and the relay klicks! But there is no sound, just a few "pfft pfft". Must be something in the preamp.
Both power amps are still working.

What would you do?

Save it?

I guess it will e nearly impossible to find the front panel here in Germany. But I think, as long as the transformer is still working (and obviously it is) I should save this unit.

Any help and comments are highly appreciated.

I vote to save it.Must have dropped something really big to dent that heat sink.If it were mine...I'd work to save it.Cosmetics aside...it could be a sweet cripple when you are done with it.So it'll take you a long time to get'r done...some things in life are worth waiting for.
I'd say if the relay clicks on and you are not blowing fuses...whats the problem? Its working pretty good so far.Rusty transformer case only.Take it apart,clean it down to the bare metal,paint it up real nice.

Personally I would fix it but I also would not allow someone to rip me off for $30 for ONE knob.I'd buy another unit for $30 and steal the knobs of that one.Or make one!

You could make a power knob out of a shell casing if you can find such a thing in Germany.Fill it with silicone and slide it in position.Brace it up till the silicone starts to harden up.

Yes, true. Think, I will try to save it. But want to have the faceplate first. Otherwise its no fun.

Well, I paid 10€. At that place, where I have my music practice room, there is an scrap export or something, too.

African people are filling old cars there. Mostly with old electronic stuff like TV and refrigerators. Then the full cars are mostly shipped to "Tin Can, Nigeria". I dont know more.

Sometimes they have stuff like this. Once i got a small Pioneer SX-450, too.

The roof of that building is mainly broken. That's why snow and rain comes in.

The insides look OK, so it could be a good unit to salvage. But those pots and the faceplate are going to be tough to obtain. I'm in a situation like yours, seeking rare parts for an 1180DC. I doubt that the 2325 shares parts with other units, but you could try to see if there's some common parts, like the Dolby switch, power knob, and bass knobs. Good luck on the restoration!
 
10 Euros is what, $14! Good score. Even is you don't complete this example, you have many valuable parts for the next 2325 that crosses your path.

OK, just a small update:

The reason, that it doesnt play is on the buffer board. :thmbsp: I think, I will be able to fix it. Maybe with some help of this great forum.

IMO, part it out... put the money towards a working Marantz that does not need parts that are going to be impossible to find (plastic inlay)
 
Also true.

Maybe I have to be patient. I will give it a year to find a plate or an inlay.

I know, that in the last years at ebay Germany at least 2 NOS faceplates were sold.
If the buyers changed their faceplates to a new one, there must be some inlays out there, I guess...

I think, I will just wait. I have a wonderful and fully overhauled 2325 already.

So, this is just for having a project.

I would try and save it if I were you. Wait a while and see if you can find a new face plate, I mean i've seen them on ebay a few times so you never know? Some of those pots I don't know, but the bass pot and dolby switch you may be able to use from a lower model marantz receiver? Maybe a parts 2275 or something.

Yeah, but that one worked when it was turned on. This one looks like it fell out of Santa's sleigh from about 250 feet up and hit the sidewalk.

Parts unit. Part it out and make enough money to buy a really good unit. Think of all the people who would be made happy by getting the parts from it. Think of all the Marantz units that would be given new life. Now think of the FrankenMarantz look this one might have from all the baling wire and duct tape it would need to be held together, and the endless hours of labor and expense trying to scavenge parts for it.

Just my $02.

But whatever you decide to do with it, have a good time with it. Maybe you'll find another one and cobble them both together.

I don't see anything there that can't be rectified with a little patience and some elbow grease. I've brought back less valuable units that were nearly as bad. Just bide your time. The parts you need will show up on the 'bay.
 
Does the faceplate have to be original? I know it would be nice to have an original, but why not make a custom plate? Yeah the purists are getting out their torches about now!!! Personally I would rather save a good working unit rather than part it out. Just makes me wonder how much good gear gets ripped apart for such reasons, then better than half of the parts go in the trash. There are places online that show how to andonize aluminum and it's really not that difficult, Or try a piece of wood depending on the thickness of the orig. plate. Double layer of veneer? Can be steamed and molded to different curves and angles if unfinished. Possibilities are endless when One thinks outside the box a bit. Keep us posted!
 
According to Murphy, as soon as you part out a cosmetically challenged 2325 with a good amp section, another beautiful 2325 receiver will show up with a completely smoked amp section for about 50 bucks.

Ok, I decided to store it at a safe place and just wait. Maybe I will find a faceplate in the near future. Or something else will happen. Who knows?

For some reason the ad didn't mention replacing the metal cover. Guess it wasn't a "Required" repair.

But you know, based on that, I'd reconsider my comment to part it out. Even if it just meant letting it sit in the attic until another unit was found. But if it was me, I would just like to know the extent of chasing around after possible unobtainium prior to starting.

Here is a small update:

The receiver is singing again!!:banana:

The problem was on the buffer board and on the power supply. On the power supply, Transistor H804 was broken. It was not that bad and I was able to fix it myself, although, I dont know much about electronics.
