My PL-71 has always had a problem with speed fluctuations. I was gonna order caps for it and two new switches to see if I could get it to stabilize. Well today I was messin around in the shop and realized I had a handfull of little switches I had salvaged from some old basket case RTR. They were the right size physically, had a 5 amp rating, and several of them required just about the same force to actuate. I had forgotten I had them packratted away. Anyway, it didn't take long to put a couple of them in and shazam! Speed steady!!!:music: I checked the old ones with a meter, and found that one of them indeed was bad. When actuated it consistently had 2 to 4 ohms resistance, and always changed each time actuated. Me happy!

When stuff like this happens- doesn't it just make you kinda giddy? Dang- those are nice solutions especially when it's been a nagging issue.
 
I've never even opened my PL-71 up to see what's underneath/inside. It's never had a speed problem so far, rock steady. Should it start to act up, though, this is very good info. Can you post pictures?
 
Yeah, it's cold out there now, but I'll tough it out just for you, chicks. I'll try posting some in a bit....
 
Here's a couple of pics, one of the switches in question and one of the switches installed. The red and black ones are the original Matsushita switches, and the green ones are Omrons salvaged. They all checked steady at 0 ohms when actuated. I also have a PL-55DX that uses the same switches and suffers the same problem. I need a tonearm weight and mat for it before using it, but it is essentially the same turntable except it has auto return. The motor and platter are the same, as well as a lot of other stuff. If you look inside your PL-71 you'll be surprised how simple it is. Guess that's to be expected from a fully manual turntable. I love mine and wouldn't trade it.

Yup, it has. I was gonna call you today and tell you about it, but got busy listening to all those DG's I found yesterday. Cindy wasn't too awful mad at me about them. I thought she would castrate me, but she was pretty cool. Maybe I should sleep lightly for a few days...
Chicks, if yours develops a speed problem, I have several of those switches and would gladly send you a couple.

Chicks, I missed a Mac 1700(I think, not sure of model) a couple of years ago. It was on CL here in the Austin area, and I was 30 min. late contacting them. I think it was $125 or so, and someone here got it and said it was immaculate with box and manuals. I was sick for several days.

Got mine for $99 without the cab, then traded a $20 receiver from the GW for the case later. Here's what you missed. Despite a few years' age difference, they look like they were made for each other. Lousy lighting right now, but they look great in daylight.

Hey Ghog, I came across this thread while researching speed fluctuations for the Pioneer PL-55DX. Thank you so much for posting this information. I was wondering if you could provide a part number for the Omrons you used as a replacement switch. I would like to order some so I can enjoy my turntable again without the playback problems. Thanks Ghog.
