Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Today was a good day. I got to visit a fellow AK friend that is a forward thinker when it comes to speaker engineering and a great person. I had a great visit, and left with possibly the best JBL drivers imaginable for my next ewave project. (Only this will be named the Expensive-Wave). These are the JBL LE14H-3's. The motors on these are enormous and should do very well in my 3.75ft^3 Barzilay cabinets. There are a lot more hurdles to overcome before this project becomes reality, but I now have the foundation for a killer set of home built speakers. Thanks:thmbsp:

I had the chance to hear these speakers today without the foam on the sides. This was my first chance to hear the B&C CD's with the QSC waveguide and I was impressed. The vocals coming out of this combo are fantastic. A couple of artists we listened to were Madonna and Audioslave and it sounded like Madonna and Chris were right there in the room with us. The sound was open and natural, like many of the waveguide combos I've heard, but these were extremely smooth sounding, even at the high volumes Zilch listens at. :yikes: The bass was also very good and seemed to mate well with the HF combo. Did I mention how smooth they sound? They remind me of the BMS I've heard a few times.

So who's going to build the first pair?

There are significant performance compromises involved in mating 15" woofers with the standard eWaveguides, let alone the taller QSC.

Seeing as how Simi was barely able to fit a rear-mounted AE 15" and an eWave-size waveguide in his Barzilays, fitting the 3.5" taller QSC on that baffle with a 416 would seemingly be a dubious quest.... ;)

I have access to the 416-8A, which is a different critter (T/S-wise) than the 416-8B. AFAIK. YMMV. The "A" shares T/S params with the "Z" variant, or so I learned on the internet. And of course, I believed it because it was the internet.

I have obviously failed to think before beginning to scheme. Otherwise, I would have wielded my trusty measuring tape beforehand!
 
You can always build a separate box to sit on top and house the wave guide.. I'd do what ever it takes to be able to use those JBL drivers.
 
My first Econowave is finished and I must say that I am impressed with the sound quality:banana::banana: The manner in which this project was taken from design to usable, interchangeable, high quality modular system is first rate. This is a great collaberation for a first time speaker builder to learn a lot and reap very satisfying rewards for a little dough, thanks.


Now for the questions: The DC300 is optimized at 3 cuft vented but the KD cabs are 1.65 cuft, will they benefit from a larger cab and will the vent size change?

Can I over stuff a box, and how will it affect sound?
 
Hi all, I haven't been on AK for months, but had reason to think of this thread... Some time ago I used JBL 3677 cabs with an Econo Wave Guide, B&C DE250, and JBL 2226:

Then I moved up to a very large wood horn (much like TAD TH-4001) then TAD TD-4001 driver, and finally TAD 1601 woofer in a larger box to make a sort of TAD 2402 clone. But I digress.

The JBL setup is now extra to my needs, and would be a great jumpstart for someone starting down the Econo or Four-Pi road, and I need to make space.

Sorry if this is out of place. I'm hoping it is so specific to this thread, and about getting a fellow traveler going, that it's okay here.

Barzilays have become a very popular eWave platform. For all I know, there are taller and shorter ones. There was a post from the daughter here in the forum last year. It'd be cool if someone came up with the literature. :yes:

Yes, and Gordon suggests very much so. I'll be giving DC250 another try in these at stock volume. Vent size changes with cab volume if the tuning is to remain the same.

Closed box alignments take over-stuffing better than vented ones. "Congested" is how I'd describe the sound of overdoing it.... :dunno:

Ewave in Mo

Thanks for the quick reply Z. Here is my finished Ewave with DC300, heavy stuffing in old junk Sony cabs at about 2cuft with 2 2"x8" vents. Sounds good but maybe a bit overstuffed, I'll start removing to taste. These cabs are just temporary until I can build a pair of 3cuft cabs this spring.

Hey Rick, it was great meeting up with you yesterday. Very interesting system John has. Four Field Coils in one big ass box was cool. Don't know if I have the same taste as John but I was still impressed. I think he lost about 3 grand when he broke the cantaliver on his cart....what a shame. I really want to come down and listen to your TAD woofs. Maybe George, Dan, and I can swing by sometime. Cheers.

Congrats wingman. They look good. How do they sound??? I think a ESS AMT 1 b, c, or d passive radiator would fit nice in that hole. You would have to model it though. Good job.
 
Zilch , just wondering why is the box with 3012LF and QSC DE250 upside down in the PIC? should it be listened that way? and also between this setup and the standard enconowave D220ti , on a rating between 1 to 10 , how would you rate them?

Heh. Yeah, it would have been fun but I had tube amp building class in SF at the time. I'm building the line stage that Joyce brought to the meetup you hosted. The class is really great.
 
Anyone know how much Wayne Parham's 4PI crossover components cost? I can't seem to find a list, though I'll admit I didn't spent a lot of time looking.
