That's a pretty good price. MCM also has them in stock now.
I'm sorta wedded to PE for this purchase. They shipped my chokes, Lpads, caps & R's, charged shipping & promised the horns later. So I've already paid to have them shipped.

I don't actually need more PH612, but I bought a batch of Seleniums and I know eventually more people will turn up with Advents they want converted. It's absurdly easy so why not have the parts on hand?
 
Well I think I have about decided to start collecting the parts to do an Econo-Waveguide. But now I have to figure out what speakers to use as a starting point. I am on a very tight budget so has to be something cheap. A friend has some Bose 501s that seem like they would not be a bad started point except for the terrible staples holding on the grills. Do those seem like they would work well? And besides those does any one have any suggestions on other budget type speakers to start with?

That don't mean much: I've only ever built one once, and it was a horizontal center channel.

At some point, I'll try it. What counts is the vertical polars, i.e., what happens to the nulls and the forward lobe. D'Appolito was very specific about the influence of filter orders in his original work; all of that must be assessed as well.

Hot off the workbench, Advent-based Econo-Waves in custom Baltic birch cabinets with mahogany veneer. I like! I will be searching for the sweet spot, experimenting with stuffing, playing with the LPAD, swapping around some gear, and rearranging my room such as I'm able, but just dropping them in the corner and hooking them up, the project is totally worth it, even with the extra cost of custom cabinets. Thanks Zilch and everyone!

A very classy implementation. Great choice of color and finish. What's in those for drivers? If you have build photos please share.
 
Yup. One of my favorite woofers. I've done 3 ewaves with Original Advent woofers (4 if you count DQ-10s). I'll bet in a box that size those sound great.

Thank you. I started out with Utility Advents that I picked up from PioneerGuy75 around Christmas - I think he had refoamed the woofs. (Studied your Utility thread quite a bit - thanks for that.)

When I got them home, they were aesthetically a little too, uh, Foghatty to get the approval of the head decorator, so I started in this direction. This is the 3rd cabinet I've built and I'm getting better - if you're a woodworker you can pick out a number of flaws without trying too hard, but without a close inspection I think most people would say they look pretty good. I'm pleased and had many, many good evenings planning and cutting and staining and ...

I didn't take any photos as I went along. So it's an Advent woofer from a Utility (found '79 date stamp in cabs) and pretty much the standard kit. CAT5 internal wiring, Cardas solder, Acoustistuff, 3 heavy Dayton cone/spike footers on each - that's about all I added, all things I had laying around from previous projects. Crossover mounted in the empty space in the bottom where it can be easily dorked with. 3/4" Baltic ply all around. Two window braces, one mounted above and one below the woofer. Embedded magnets to hold the 1/4" MDF grills.

I'll be tempted to try the fancier compression driver, and I'll be tempted to try some fancier components in the crossovers, and I'll probably do that not because I'm unhappy in any way, just to see what I can learn.

It's been fun!

Update: Also, I took an idea from Wayne1 and dampened the inside of the waveguide with some dampening spray.

Nice. :thmbsp: Does the decorator approve? That is as important as the sound....maybe more important.

Thanks - Despite showing the slightest profile I could design and despite complementing upholstery and the walls in the room, the response has been muted. But the lack of objection is victory, really.
 
Hey guys,

I have question of resistance, if I were to run the ewave biamped and took out the Lpad on the HF of the >95db crossover what kind of resistance would the amp see?

There is also something to the crossover frequency and driver spacing for it to work right as well. With larger drivers and the size of these guides, correct center to center spacing may not be perfect, but may be doable. In this regard, The standard E'wavs guide would probably be preferable to the QSC.

Having built Diappolito's Aria 5 (which I still have) I can say that the result can be impressive, but that design uses 5 1/4 inch mid woofers. He also had a version with 6.5 inch drivers, never built that one.
