I'd wager it took some of the "edge" off the hole saw, as well...

I've seen sparks fly off a saw blade cutting mdf in a well-lit shop. The stuff includes anything they can shovel off the mill floor... :no::thumbsdn::drool:

Plywood is mostly wood with a little bit of glue to stick the lams together. MDF is about half glue, the other half??? who knows. It gums up and stinks like one of those bags you find on fire on your front pourch on Devils Night, and when you step on it to put it out, it is full of crap. That's it: MDF smells like burning ****.:thumbsdn:

I have a full size drill press with a 2hp motor and at one point, it stopped the motor. MDF = bad
 
Finished and very happy! Thanks, Zilch for the LE14a/QSC crossover design and patient explanations.

Based on previous discussion in this thread, I reduced the cabinet height by buying the 4 inch legs to replace the 8 inch ones I had on there originally. Retuned the cabinet to 32 hz (approx) using the adapter shown in the original port hole. Brought the waveguides forward to be the same as the ones Zilch used to design the crossovers. I built the new crossovers on the old board so it could drop in place an utilize the old selector switch hole. I am just starting to listen but my first impressions are very positive.

My project might be veering slightly off-course again. How about a Z19 crossover driving Altec 902-8Bs on Mantaray horns? Considering what I paid, I do believe they'd still meet the "economy" part of the concept. :D
 
Not sure what 8Bs are, but MantaRays are not waveguides, rather, Keele(ish) CD horns.

[That's no excuse not to build them, of course.... :D ]

8As with a loading cap, like the 8T. For that matter, I haven't been able to figure out what the difference is between the 8B and 8T.

IIRC, the 8T had the loading cap and no cosmetic cover. Just bare driver and loading cap. You may want to confirm that.:scratch2:
Or did you already know that?

Hmm. The cabinets I bought are supposed to have 8Bs, but the only driver pulled so far has no rear cover - just the naked loading cap. According to this diagram, though, the 8T should have a cover.

From what I've read, there is no telling what Altec was up to in the late 80s and early 90s. I'll know more in the morning.

I went back and searched for the info in threads at LHF which I thought held the ianswer to your question, but I have not found anything confirming what I said earlier.

FYI, here's a pic of my drivers before I removed the loading caps and fixed a set of covers from GPA:

It won't make much difference either way. Most say the sound is better w/o the caps. This is one of my diaphragms FYI:

George and I spent yesterday building a pair of Open Baffle, Line Array, EconoWaves. He got here at 11:00 and left at around 5:00. I think we made good progress. But we were both tired when we assemble the second speaker.....can you see the mistake. It will be fixed today when I finsh the wiring.

The drivers are PE 69 cent NSB close outs.

The horns are JBL 6"x6" wave guides with Selenium D210T

The cross overs are stock eWave

They ar 48" tall and 24" wide.

George is the tall old white guy and I am the shorter fat old white guy. Who says old white guys don't know how to have fun.
