Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I need a tweeter that would operate from say 8K up.
Would the D220TI on the standard waveguide be a good choice?
Da ya think they would outperfrom the Eminence APT200?

I was considering using them as my rear speakers are econowaved.

From 8K and up? I dunno. The APT200 (and especially the APT150, which I like even more) are really sweet... and, AFAIK, even more efficient in the top octave. If you need something to keep up with a 101dB sensitivity woofer/mid section (like I did in my Big Reds- three-way with double 18" woofers and double Eminence Alpha 6 mids per cabinet, with an APT150 tweeter), then the APT150 is hard to beat. The APT150 allows it to be flat up to 17KHz, before it starts to roll off slightly, even at that SPL level at one watt...

The APT150 also won't need any EQ (compensation) to be flat, up there... its mass rolloff point is an octave higher than the Selenium D220, at least.

Uses a modified EV SRO 15", in a 9 cubic foot cabinet. About 96dB sensitivity.

Uses dual TOA 15" woofers per cabinet, in a 2.5-way setup. Right at 96dB sensitivity, about 8.5 cubic foot (total) enclosure. Good down to 32 Hz.

Uses custom-reconed Berhinger 15" (2.5" VC) in about 3.25 cubic feet each. Made to play down to about 40-45 Hz (subwoofers in lower cabinets carry the low bass down to 22 Hz). Right at 95dB sensitivity.

Though they are 15", the last ones are in remarkably small cabinets for the woofer size. And, with a slightly larger cabinet (say, 4 to 4.5 cubic feet), they can easily go into the 30s, with a similar woofer...

EDIT: BTW- the last two projects can be heard at the upcoming Anime Weekend Atlanta- www.awa-con.com . The event will be occurring Sept. 17-19, at the Cobb Galleria Centre in northwest Atlanta GA...

Holy E-waves!

Hey guys,

Got a project going with some ewaves so I figured I'd post here. The project is for a chapel at an orphanage in Honduras (www.faithhome.net), hence "Holy E-waves". I've done some mission trips down there and kind of became the de facto sound guy. I've got parts for a sound system (mixer, mics, etc) laying around the living room, an amp on the way, and a prototype speaker in the garage. The chapel is probably big enough to seat a couple hundred.

The speakers are nothing super special, just an Eminence Delta 12A, Selenium D210 and stock EW crossover. The box is 2.78 ft^3 and tuned to 50Hz for an f3 of 55Hz. Not a lot of low end but good "thump". The reason for the rough appearance is that it's just a prototype. For the final version the drivers and XOs will be packed up in my luggage and we'll build boxes down there. Sending packages to Honduras is not exactly dependable so this way we'll be assured they make it.

Econo Kappa Update

Here are some updated shots for those interested in my EconoKappa 9 project. Getting close now. Have the xover mounted, bracing completed, vents installed and one cab pretty well painted. Should be sound checking by tomorrow!!

EconoKappa's Finshed

Well after several warm garage days and a mountain of sawdust the EconoKappa's are finished- short of final touch up work.

They look pretty kewl I think with the tell tale look of the rounded spline cut corners. They are something else to listen to as well. The efficient 97db seems to all be there. The combination of the Radian drivers, QSC horn lens and modified 15" EV SPA woofers combine better than expected with the modified "Z" 19 Xovers. Very smooth and detailed and just begging for more power!! The longer I play them the more I am growing to like them. That Radian driver is very captivating!

So I guess we can add another design to the Econowave therory, these being in the 6.5 cu ft variety!!

Great work DC!!! I really like the front collums. I think the woof is one of the better ones out there....IMHO. What kind of low end are you getting out of them?

Thanks for look/see, right now the low end is in the mid 40's, but I expect that to drop as they break in more. It is really a superbly smmoth transision between the drivers. The whole thing sounds quite effortless to make great sound.

The rebuilt SP15A EV woofers are a really nice ones to use here. While the VC is only like 2.5", the new high temp formers/ flat wire is rated for 400 watts!! I could have gone with a standard recone but the extra for the this rebuild was not all that nuch more. I am glad now that I did. The extra effienctcy was well worth the price of admission. The Radian 750P driver is also a perfect match for theis QSC waveguide- used with the "Z" 19 xover you can taylor match the 21K top end perfectly!! This has been my most exciting (re)build to date. I will be sorry to see my 19's go, but there is a new player in town.

Sounds like both of you may have problems with JBL's titanium tweeters. The D220Ti spec'ed in the EconoWave is also titanium. Maybe you should try a BMS driver with mylar diaphragms. They are smoother than the Ti and not so "in your face."

Same with the B&C DE250 designs, with Kapton diaphragms.

I just finished a build with Radian 750P drivers- I found them to be pretty damn good, very smooth!!

Jensen Spectrum 540 Wave update

Turn that woofer speaker upside down so that the woofer and waveguide have a chance of integrating, and listen again. Also, invert the polarity of the compression driver, and see if that changes your perception.... :dunno:

Same results. The phase on the compression driver is correct. Swapped the polarity and anything in the shared frequencies went very quiet.

They do sound a bit better closer together (as expected.) I just can't listen to them for very long. Wish it were different as I enjoyed building them and following all the other builds. The Kappa 9's look killer!

I will be building a new DIY pair and will report results.
 
Faster, have you tried different amps? I like my eWaves much better with tube amps. They sound very good with SS, but the tubes just smooths it out a bit.
 
A minor revilation this morning. I have my OblaWaves still in the garage and have been listening to them from 8' away. They still sound wonderful. The best ewaves I've heard so far. But the imaging is absolutly pinpoint. An inch left or right and the imaging falls apart. This morning I had the music going and walked out of the garage to take the trash out and when I walked back in (15' from the speakers) I stopped to listen from that distance and from there the imaging held up moving 3' left and right of center. I think it is time to put them in the big room!!!

Not this weekend but next a friend and I are going to assemble the InfinityWaves. Looking forward to that build as they (hopefully with be nice and high end looking)

I have used the BMS 4550, 4552ND, and 4555. I now have a pair of 4540MD's to test, but have not fired them up yet. I love the sound of the mylar diaphragm, but also love the sound of titanium, although the Ti is a bit crisper or "in your face."

It will probably require some crossover modifications, but help is close at hand on this thread. And the B&C that Zilch mentioned already has a crossover worked out for it. I have a pair of E'Waves using the B&C, but to me the BMS is smoother.

Not unusual behavior for a line array as at 15ft you're in the farfield range of the projection. What's probobly the best part of this system is i suspect it holds directivity on both axis well below the crossover region. It would be nice to see some polars of a system like this.
