How much SS power are you guys using with your Ewaves to get the dynamics and sound you like? I realize it will depend some of your woofer/XO choice. Thanks! :thmbsp:

I am using a 200 wpc Sherwood MOSFET amp along with a DBX C2 preamp. Plenty of headroom and excvellent dynamics. My system is 97 db efficient so that helps as well.

Aside from that muscle amp I am also using a small 23 watt per channel Fisher 500B tube reciver. It actually sounds pretty damn good with my e-waves!

I'll be darned. I thought pretty much everyone had been seduced by More is Better, while I sit here with my 50wpc Rowland clone MOSFET amp.

My other fave amp is the Accuphase P-300. These have meters so I can see that turn-it-down volume occurs when it's peaking at about 5W, around 1W average level.

Unless you're deaf or throwing a warehouse party I don't see a need for a lot of power.

I'm working on a tube amp project for publication, and one of the goals is high damping factor. I hope it will work well with reasonably sensitive ewaves and be unaffected by load impedance changes. 10W is the goal, but it will probably have a db or two of headroom.
 
The system is limited by woofer until you hit about 100 dB @1W@1m efficiency for the woofer. So 50 watts is stupid loud for the high efficiency designs and thumpin' for the "average" woofers. Low efficiency? Not sure anyone has really tried that :D

Don, so you'd say that 50 wpc is plenty for the standard crossover design?

Duffinator, is yours a high efficiency build?

The basic "standard" eWave crossover design choice is >95dB or <95dB 1W@1m efficiency for the woofer (with the L-pad fine tune the level of the HF section to match the woofer). I would think 50 watts with a "typical" 90 dB efficiency woofer would work for most folks in modest sized listening room at wife acceptable listening levels. Others would argue that 500 watts is more appropriate (and the wife should go shopping for a while if she didn't leave 15 years ago) and >110 dB is about right. Only you know what is loud enough for you. :yes:
 
I was running my OblaWaves with a Decware Zen amp with 1.5wpc until today. I traded my OblaWaves for OB horns for a couple weeks.
 
I'm using a pair of Hypex UCD180 modules, 90W into 8 ohms, which sound gorgeous (and seem like way more power than is really needed).
 
Speaking of amps, I just bench tested Kegger's minimalist SE KT-88 amp. He's got a few well refined tricks in there and the performance is really impressive. These things get better every time he folds in another development. The measured specs make traditional 2-stage pentode (or triode) amps look pretty sick. Goes to show what a difference cautious, attentive development makes.
This could be a really nice unit for ewaves. I'm gonna hook it up & give it a spin.
 
Ross, is it a single tube SET? What is the driver?

Output stage is a power pentode with divided load (60% in plate circuit, 40% in cathode circuit.) The driver is a high gain signal pentode like12GN7 or similar, triode connected, with a MOSFET CCS as a load.
 
I finally got my E wave cabinets (mostly) finished. I started these last spring, but it ended up being a really busy summer and didn't have much time to work on them. I have been listening to them for months unfinished.

I used the Pyle horns with Selenium D220TI drivers and Eminence Beta 12A II woofers. I've been driving them with either my DIY Pass Aleph-J or my Tubelab Simple SE. I've also used a couple different chip amps with them. But they really sound fantastic with the Simple SE, and the ~6W/ch really go a long way.
