511B repeated to verify measurement conditions; mic lowered 1.5" to be on 811B axis, and same-length window advanced ~200us for shorter horn length. All other settings identical for both horns and drivers:

Two stupid questions:
What would be the effect of using different impedence drivers - say a 16 ohm woofer and an 8 ohm horn driver? I'd really rather not order new 16 ohm diaphragms unless I really need to.

How would one go about calculating the component changes to modify the crossover point?

I like the HF comp built into the M19/Z19 crossover design, but the particular parts I have on hand don't necessarily play well within the confines of the venerable Altec M 19 speaker design. Unless I go completely nuts and build speaker hats to hold 811B horns.

Your diaphragm statement is not making sense to me; the circuit is for an 8-Ohm compression driver as used in Model 19.

I didn't think about that, I was thinking of matching the woofer and compression driver impedance.
 
Am I missing something...or are both 511 and 811 horns essentially the same, on-axis, using the Z-19 crossover? :scratch2:

They have effectively the same frequency response above 1.2 kHz through 15 kHz with the GPA 902-8A drivers. A bit of upper midrange (3 - 6 kHz, +2.5 dB) forwardness begins 1 kHz lower on 511. I didn't change any settings on the crossover.

So much for decades of apparent speculation and misinformation about this.

[It took all of 10 minutes plus the determination to do it to actually resolve.... ;) ]

I was under the impression that the Z19 has a 1.2kHz crossover point. From that chart, it looks like HF response starts falling like a rock at 1.5kHz.
 
Acoustic crossover occurs at -6 dB so the LF and HF sum to flat across the crossover region.... :yes:
 
So builders can use Z-19 on 511/811 horns interchangeably.
Yes, with new GPA 902-8A drivers, at least.

Polars are not presently contemplated. It's not my intent to document the horns themselves, merely to verify their and the Altec drivers' compatibility with Z19 for those desiring to upgrade Valencias and the like to Model 19 performance levels, for example.

I am restoring a neglected pair of Altec 19's as we speak. I'm curious how the Z19 crossover differs from the original.

I know the data is all there in this thread but to me thats just pretty pictures I don't understand. Can someone describe the difference?
 
The high-frequency drive is not derived from the low-frequency filter, thus allowing the sytem to be biamped. With Z19 topology, the mid and high controls have a wider range of adjustability and less interdependence. Z19 uses higher-qualty components than the original M19, and most importantly, NEW ones.

Original M19 crossovers still bring $$$ on resale; recapped ones, not so much. That says build Z19s, instead.... :yes:
 
Take my word for it Athony- you will eventually want to do this for you 19's. It is money well spent for the return you get~ least it was for me. Those improved networks with the defraction foams makes them a really improved product. I rebuilt mine and did an A/B test and was firmly convinced!

No. The L-pads are external. Do you see them on that board?.

I would not use the original inductors. Z19 uses higher-quality components throughout. :yes:
